Tonight i decided to upgrade my bios from 1.2 to 1.4. I download the windows bios update from asrock. I then closed every program open and proceded to update the bios. I seen the bios update screen and everything worked perfectly. It asked me to reboot my system which i did and then i got nothing but a blank screen. I tried to shut down the computer and boot back up but still no good. I tried to clear the cmos..no good. I even tried to take the cmos battery out with no luck. What recorse do i have other than to return the board for an rma? Any help would be appreciated.

thanks,

Ya i think that is the last time i will every update my bios from windows. Ive never had a problem before but this kind of burned me. Anyone else with any ideas on what i could try other than RMA it? I might just buy a new one from Newegg and when i get the replacement sell it on the FS/FT forums cause i know how long RMA procedures can take sometimes.

Sometimes this problem just seems to heal itself. It may be a corrupted BIOS, or not.

Try this:
- Pull the AC power plug from the wall.
- Press the power button repeatedly to discharge all system capacitors.
- Pull the BIOS battery.
- Put the BIOS reset jumper on the reset position.
- Let it sit for a couple hours.
- Put the BIOS reset jumper back to normal position and re-insert the bios battery.
- Replace the AC power plug in the wall.
- Make at least a few attempts to boot the system.

Sounds like mystical bullsh*t, but that's worked for a lot of users.

You could also ask Asrock to send a replacement BIOS chip.

Hope this helps!

thanks drunkster. I will try that. I might just order a new one from newegg just in case. If it ends up working i will just sell the new one on the FS/FT forums. I use my computer way to much for it to be down for very long. I really don't want to spend the money but sometimes you got to do what you got to do.

Well i emailed asrock to get an RMA. It appears they do not take rma directly from the end user. I don't now how this would work if you bought the board from a company that only had a 30 day return policy. Thankfully newegg backs up what they sell and they are going to rma it. Which im extremly happy about since it will be a lot smoother than from the manufact. I remember just returning an epox board for my brother and it took a month to get the board back. Apparently they get the board in and try to fix it rather than just ship you a refurbed board which makes no freakn sense. Anyways i degress, i am glad i bought the board from newegg.

The last time I upgraded the BIOS, it wouldn't boot back up as well. So I let it sit for a couple hours trying to figure out what I'm going to do for a computer. After I figured out a backup plan, I pulled the board out of my computer, then though what the heck I'll try it once more. Hooked everything up, it booted up, and I haven't had any issues with it since.

EDIT - I've got the ASRock 989Dual board too

Here is my update. I tried everything to get this board to work. I took out the cmos battery, put the jumper on cmos clear, and took the power cable out of the power supply for a day. Still no good. I guess i really needed to return the board anyways. Something was really wrong with the network portion of the bored. It was quite flakey. Once in awhile it would just disconnect from the network for 5 seconds and then reconnect. I started figuring this out when i would come home and yahoo messanger would be diconnected with a dialog "try again" which i have never had before. I then periodically would be working on my computer and the icon for the network connection would disappear and i would be disconnect for about 5 seconds and they it would reconnect. It had to be the uli network because every other computer on my network would not do this. I thought even maybe it could be the network port on my switch going bad or the network cable and i tried to switch both of these with no luck. I tried to even reinstall the network drivers with no luck. Ya i could have used a network card in my closet to fix it and it was kind if minor but i don't like the network stream going over the pci bus eventhough it shouldn't be hogged for bandwith because only thing that should be on the pci bus now is my network card and my sound card.

Anyways i go to take everything apart today and i take the clasp off the heatsink and i pull the heatsink out and the cpu comes with it. I was LIKE WTF did i just ruin my cpu. The damm heatsink was stuck so good to the cpu that it pulled the cpu up with it. I inspected the cpu very carefully and it only slightly bent one pin which i was able to easily bend back without breaking anything. I put the cpu back in the motherboard and just connected it to make sure everything was ok. The system came on and everything spinned up so im pretty sure i didn't harm anything but damm i would never think the cpu would come up with the heatsink like that.

Anyways my bored is back on its way to newegg and hopefully they can ship it out before turkey day.

I still don't understand how a bios update could ruin my MB like this. I mean the system check when was writing the bios was A'OK. It showed me everything was good. Almost makes me fear to update the replacement when i get it.
