ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 IDE HD Problem...

Hi all,

Ok i have been attempting to diagnose this pronlem for hours and hours at this point and still cannot understand what is going on. (NOTE IDE HD's ARE NOT ATA 133) I have 1 WD 80GB Sata plugged in (this is always plugged in through all my trials and tribulations as it is my OS drive and always seems to function properly) on the motherboard, and an IDE DVD-RW on the same cable as an 80 GB Maxtor D740X IDE. I can plug this IDE cable into either the Blue IDE or the Black IDE slot in the motherboard with this setup and have a completely working setup. Now.. I have a 2nd 80 GB Maxtor D740X IDE that i want to plug in also. I have no problem replacing the other IDE drive with ths one and having it work just as the other one does in the setup previously described. However, when i try to put both drives on the same cable, plug the 2 HD's in one IDE and the DVD-RW in the other, 0740 i think is what comes up in the bottom corner of the POST, and when i press to enter setup it takes quiet a long time and only recognizes one drive. It also will not boot into windows with this configuration and comes to a halt with that 0740 in the bottom corner. I have also tried no DVD-RW and 2 HD's this also results in the same thing. I also tried HD + DVD-RW on one cable and just one HD on the other cable plugged into the other slot, this does not work either but boots into windows. It then only shows ONE drive in windows and asks if i would like to format it, the same drive that was working perfectly one plugged in only with the DVD-RW. I have also tried these configuratons in opposite slots on the motherboard.

I have tried a merriad of slave/master/cable_select stuff with these IDE's and have gotten nowhere, im not sure if i am missing something here or if this somehow just isnt going to happen. In short, 2 IDE HD's will not work together, and if both IDE slots are plugged into on the motherboard, the IDE hd's do not function again even the one that is plugged in with the DVD-RW and windows only shows 1 drive and format option only, cannot read drive.

Any light on this situation would be appreciated. If anymore information is needed i will be happy to provide it if i can.

Thank you all.

The Maxtor D740X is a ATA133 drive.

You should really connect it as Cable Select (CS) to get the
maximum performance from the drive(s) (UDMA5).

Both IDE controllers on the motherboard are ATA133.
You didn't mention the brand/model of the DVD drive
but that most likely should be hooked up on the Blue
connector on the 2nd IDE channel, with both HD's hooked
up on the Primary IDE channel (CS).

Thanks LiLihTecH i'll give that stuff a shot! I appreciate you taking the time to read my post and respond.

The DVD-RW is an NEC 3540A. I tried what you said both HD's on cable select plugged into MOBO first slot. The DVD-RW plugged into the 2nd and it doesnt even boot into windows, asks me to select a boot device even tho the boot device selected is the Western Digital SATA Drive, and that works without a problem when these drives arent plugged in. It also only see's on drive and doesnt display the name properly in the bios. I guess i will have to settle for one drive + dvdrw + sata for now. Not sure what i else i can really come up with to try.

If you try each drive one at a time do you have the same issue?

If so, then it is a jumper issue on the drives.
How many jumpers are you using? (should only be one on each drive)
