I thought I would share my C2D6300 upgrade I put together today: $250 for the C2D & AsRock 775i65G which I slotted in my existing case with all the peripherals installed.

Core2Duo 6300
AsRock 775i65G
Samsung DDR400 - 512 x 2
Geforce 5900XT
Maxtor 80G Sata HD
Pioneer DVD/RW
Leadtek TV/Capture card
Budget case w/ 300w PS

Since my old system had the Asus PE800se m/b with the i865 chipset, I was hoping to just plug in my existing HD with WindowsXP installed and all my software to the new m/b. Luckily it booted right up and when the "Welcome" screen came on...I was one happy camper! No reloading Windows and all my highly-tuned programs! :D

I overclocked the fsb to its maximum 300 and set the ram timings to 2.5-3-3-7, (I will try the 2-2-2-5 I used with my old Prescott 2.4/533 system - overclocked to 170 fsb- 3.1Ghz). I tested 3DMark2001se and got nearly a 18,000 score, up from 12,000 with the Prescott o/c, with the same chipset, ram & Geforce 5900! What a processor!!

It has been only run a few hours, but the system seems (as)rock solid so far. I'm sure this processor could be bumped much higher than the 300 fsb maximum, but a 1200 bus speed from a $50 m/b and DDR400 ram is nothing to complain about. There are also some voltage adjustments, low/auto/high, but I just kept them at default.

This will probably just be a temporary system and I will upgrade to a proper m/b, DDR2, PCI-E gpu, HD, next year when the new m/b's have matured a bit and DX10 gpu's are available. But this Home Theatre/Gamer system is so much quieter than the old Prescott, that is worth the $250 by itself! :D

where did you purchase your 775i65G from?

I bought it from NCIX Langley store. It is the Rev.203. It see NewEgg (the don't ship to Canada) has this board for $45 and the OEM version $35! I guess they will be giving it away soon!!

Xvys, how is the onboard sound on your new board?

It seems comparable in sound quality to the Soundstage 5.1 onboard audio that was on my previous Asus 865 board, but the AsRock does not have the coaxial digital output connector, which I missed on the Asrock as I got the dreaded feedback hummm. But it turned out to be a lousy plug. I replaced it with another one I had with better shielding around the plug and the speaker humm disappeared.

I am very pleased with the stability of the system. No problems whatsover, although I have no tried to push the ram settings past 2.5-3-3-7. One of my Samsung 512 sticks is Cas 2.5, while the newer OEM 512 stick is Cas 3.0, but both run dual channel at 2.5 at 200mhz (3:2 frontside bus 300).

One could always buy an Soundblaster Azalia for $25 which has the digital output and probably better sound and better gaming EAX software. The onboard Realtek audio does not seem to have any software that I have found so far.

Xvys,
I appreciate your report!
I too have a P5P800SE (with D820@3.44)
2 gig Maxtor DDR500
ATI x850XTPE AGP

I'll be looking into picking up the AsRock 775i65G and an E6400.
Hope I can get that baby up near 300fsb.

Cheers!!!!

Xvys,

I too appreciate you posting your experiences with your Conroe/775i65G upgrade.

I also want to recycle my RAM and videocard into my future Conroe upgrade.

Patriot 2x512MB DDR400 kit @ 2-3-3-6
ATI 850 Pro AGP flashed to 16 pipes and oc'd to X850XTPE speeds

I have an old Audigy I'm not currently using that I can use to get the digital out connector and IEEE 1384 out of the 775i65G.

Please keep us informed as to your further experiences with your budget Conroe upgrade.

Well, I bit and ordered an AsRock 775i65G + E6300 processor from ZZZ today. From the ZZZ description it should be the newer rev that supports C2D.

I plan on reusing a X850XT and some ballistix ram.

cowlickkid,
My x850 is was also originally a Pro that I flashed for 16 pipes and OC it to XTPE speeds.
I added a Zalman to it to keep it cool and quiet

Also have an Audigy 4 that I'll recycle into the new setup along with an AVerMedia UltraTV 1500 MCE

Cheers!

Hi Xvys, what GHz did you end up with a 300FSB for the E6300 ... ??? I have a E6600 running on the ASRocki65g Motherboard and so far I've only been able to get it to run stable at about a 276FSB, anything higher and it will lock up the Desktop after an hour or so. Did you make any changes in the BIOS other than upping the FSB to 300n not that there are that many OC changes you can make in the first place with this board ... I did try 300FSB when I first got it and it booted into Windows but then just booted back out ... hehe

300 fsb x 7 = 2100 mhz

yep, there is not too much to adjust. I had to change the two voltage settings to high. On auto it would reboot during heavy gaming. This also may be a factor of my cheapo power supply which came with my $30 case from my previous build.

I also disabled all the power saving junk, speedstep, thermal throteling, ect and also disabled the ram compatibility option. I would use default ram timings until you get a stable o/c., and then fine tune them. I am at 2.5-3-3-8, which is default anyways with my ram.

Perhaps there may be a upper mhz limit that can be pumped through this m/b without excessive overheating, I think my rig runs pretty hot with the "aux" temp (northbridge?) at 62C idle, but I think something is awry there, as my CPU temps read 19C, then sometimes 58C for no apparant reason...

Thanks for the Info, I do have the E6600 running at a 300FSB now which equates to 2.71GHz, it's running @ half load right now &so far it's staying running. I'll let it run like this for a few hours and see if stays running. If it does I'll try a full load & see what happens. If it won't take it it will probably be due to excessive CPU Temps which are 44c to 46c right now on each Core & will probably raise to around 48c to 50c under full load then I'll have to back it off & get a better Cooler for the CPU and maybe the North-bridge Chip ... Thanks again for getting me this far & I'll post any new developments as they occur ...

The limitations of overclocking on these 865 boards would surely lie with the aging chipset, running at a 50% overclock at 300MHz/FSB1200 (the specification is 200MHz/FSB800) to get a meagre 12.5% overclock out of a current FSB1066 Conroe. It?s not being fair to the poor old thing! But it?ll be perfect for the upcoming FSB800 Allendales.:D

i just booted my new 775i65G / E6300 system fo rthe first time, and I can't get it to overclock at all! If i raise the fsb, I just end up getting no video..... I'm sorta at a loss. I have ddr 400, so that can't be the problem. Any thoughts?

Yea, it's with the 6800GT. I have tried fsb from 267-300. I seem to be able to boot at 295, but it restarts before I get to the windows splash screen. As far as AGP/PCI lock, I don't know. I haven't seen any settings for this in the bios anywhere. Can anyone enlighten me?

The default (Auto) ram timings seem to be 2.5 cas. Just an idea, Dave, but perhaps your ram cannot run at 200 mhz @ 2.5? The dividers are locked with this m/b at 3/2. A 300 fsb = 200 mhz ram speed. A 266 fsb = 177 mhz...which most DDR400 ram should be able to run @ 2.5 cas. I'm not sure if you can select 3 cas for the ram, but that may do the trick. Try 3-4-4-8 if possible.

Try setting the two voltage settings to High instead of Auto. Try enabling (or disabling) the ram compatibility mode in the bios. Make sure your power supply has enough juice, especially with the 6800 o/c. Try running your GPU at default until you reach your target??

I would try letting the RAM speeds be selected by SPD. There is an option in the BIOS to do this.

My 775i65G with E6400 booted right up at 300 fsb after putting it together. I am running my DDR400 RAM at 2-3-3-7. This is the same Patriot RAM Anand used in their testing with the 775i65G. I just happened to have the same exact sticks and they work great with this board.

Poorboy, what changes did you make to get your rig stable?

I have a E6300 with this mobo and am having trouble getting to 300FSB as well. Locks under heavy gaming as Xvys mentioned. I will try to up my voltage to "high" to see if it is stable.

Xvys, when you say you disabled ram compatibility option, do you mean the flexibility option? Because currently I have that enabled and I don't know what it does.

Setting my memory to SPD sets it at 2.5-3-3-6 and I'm pretty sure my ram is not rated for that. CPUZ says 2.5-4-4-8@200mhz and 2.5-3-3-6@133mhz. The mobo probably thinks I'm still running at 266mhz DDR =D

Any help would be appreciated.

yep, sorry I meant the ram flexibility option, which I disabled. I know that disabling the Spread Spectrum helped 775Dual-Vsta overclockers, which I also disabled.

Just got my 775i65g stable, it seems, for 2hours on Prime95 last night @300mhz FSB. It is running Prime95 right now for 8 hours (while I'm at work).

Thanks for the help. I also, set my two voltage options to "High" as well as Spread Sectrum on "Disabled". However, I have left the Flexibility Option on "Enabled".

My RAM settings are at 2.5-3-3-8 currently and I will be reducing it to 2.5-3-3-7 when I get home (assuming Prime95 is still running). I'm pretty sure it wasn't the RAM timings that was hurting the O/C, it was probably the fact that the Mobo couldn't handle the 300FSB.

Can anyone confirm that if my RAM can handle low latency on one board, it should be able to do the same on another, assuming the motherboard is stable at the same FSB?

To any and all !

How are you reading your temps ????????

My old Abit Ai7 (865PE supported Motherboard Monitor- best ever)
My ASUS P5P800SE used the supplied ASUS Monitor

What can I use with the Asrock?

I have my 775i65G and E6400 at 295 (just haven't tried 300 yet).
2 gb Mushkin xp4000 2.5-4-3-8 (voltage on high)
Enermax EG565P-VE
ATI x850 Pro @XTPE speed/16 pipes
Audigy4
AVerMedia UltraTV 1500 MCE

Running great so far.

Looks like you got a smokin' system, Paradox999! I use SpeedFan and CoreTemp, which are free software that work with the AsRock. There is also the free Everest Home Edition.
