ASRock 4CoreDual SATA2 + ATI9700Pro - no video output

I just put together a rebuild of the kids' system after the old MB fried. I used the above motherboard so that I could reuse the older AGP 8x video card, ATA hard drives, and DDR400 memory.

When I power up the system, I get lights on both DVD drives, the hard drives start to spool up, and... no video. Not even a twitch on the monitor. The power cable is connected to the card, the video cable to the monitor... what am I missing?

If I need to flash the BIOS, how do I do this without having any video output?

Any help is appreciated - thanks!

Welcome to the Anandtech forums.

OK, I have a few questions, and some suggestions.

Did you get the board new?

Have you had an opportunity to test any or all of the components, to be certain the mobo wasn't the only thing that fried?

Have you cleared the bios by removing the battery or jumpers yet?

Suggestions (if you haven't done these already)-

Try booting it barebones i.e. just vid card, CPU, ram, you can put the board on top of the box it came in to do it. You can always use a screw driver on the powers pins. That will eliminate some potential problems/culprits.

If you have more than 1 stick of ram, try 1 at a time. Always good to make certain any/all jumpers are capped correctly too.

Have you cleared the bios by removing the battery or jumpers yet? Will try that first

Thanks - I'll go through the various procedures tonight. Finished the build at about midnight last night and figured I'd ask before mucking about. :D

I see you found the old thread about this board, good deal.

To answer your question about how you can flash the bios, given there is no video, you can try booting barebones with a PCI vid card. I have a few in a parts box for just that kind of trouble shooting.

Since it came from Newegg, was it new or a refurb? Their refurbs can be a crap shoot.

Brand new unit in the box. I have an old PCI card in my backup computer that I'll try as well. Thanks for the help!
