Sounds like it just has a really long shut down time instead. I'd rather have a long boot time, TBH. You can start your system up and walk away to get a coffee, but often I need to shut down and wait it out if I'm booting into another OS or testing hardware.

Yeah - I believe what they're doing is equivalent to pausing the system post-reboot (instead of actually shutting down), and the 'instant on' resumes from that point.

Does it really take that long to boot up for most people? My XP install boots pretty quickly and my Ubuntu install boots even faster (not quite 4 seconds, but not long enough for me to care).

This is what I do.

I always had issues with sleep mode and XP, but it works beautifully in Vista.

Same here. I just put the system into standby when I'm not using it.

I'm old school. I like hibernation, Windows XP/Bear style :)

All it is is a glorified standby. If you pull the plug on the system while it is "off" it will still take just as long as the other computer to boot up.

When you should have been using a question mark? <--- and I should have used an exclamation mark?

Thats exactly what I was thinking. I hate it when i try to leave work and my lappy is taking its sweet time shutting down or going into hibernation. I'd prefer a slow startup and quick shutdown/hibernate.

Afraid your boss will come over to your cube and ask you to work on Saturday?
