I have been trying to understand the CD-RW software available, how to make functional backups of my CDs (thank you all for your advices at this forum) but now please what is the ASPI layer and what is its purpose, is it needed ? what for ?

PS: my OS is Windows 2000

The ASPI layer is what programs use to talk to the CD-RW drive. (very oversimplified explanation) Win2000 does not come with a ASPI Layer installed, Win98,ME and XP do however. Now, some burning softwares come with their own ASPI layer so they don't have to rely on the OS having one. Nero Burning ROM is a example, it has its own ASPI Layer.

If a program you installed needs to use the ASPI layer, it will tell you. If you find a program that does this, lookup ForceASPI on any search engine, should be easy to find. Just download and install it :D
