I remember back in the early 90's i heard Nutrasweet caused cancer, then i heard that it was an urban legend... now it causes cancer again?

I don't 100% understand this abstract, can some science dude translate the significance of the numbers?

The Cesare Maltoni Cancer Research Center of the European Ramazzini Foundation has conducted a long-term bioassay on aspartame (APM), a widely used artificial sweetener. APM was administered with feed to 8-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats (100-150/sex/group), at concentrations of 100,000, 50,000, 10,000, 2,000, 400, 80, or 0 ppm. The treatment lasted until natural death, at which time all deceased animals underwent complete necropsy. Histopathologic evaluation of all pathologic lesions and of all organs and tissues collected was routinely performed on each animal of all experimental groups. The results of the study show for the first time that APM, in our experimental conditions, causes a) an increased incidence of malignant-tumor-bearing animals with a positive significant trend in males (p < or = 0.05) and in females (p < or = 0.01), in particular those females treated at 50,000 ppm (p < or = 0.01); b) an increase in lymphomas and leukemias with a positive significant trend in both males (p < or = 0.05) and females (p < or = 0.01), in particular in females treated at doses of 100,000 (p < or = 0.01), 50,000 (p < or = 0.01), 10,000 (p < or = 0.05), 2,000 (p < or = 0.05), or 400 ppm (p < or = 0.01); c) a statistically significant increased incidence, with a positive significant trend (p < or = 0.01), of transitional cell carcinomas of the renal pelvis and ureter and their precursors (dysplasias) in females treated at 100,000 (p < or = 0.01), 50,000 (p < or = 0.01), 10,000 (p < or = 0.01), 2,000 (p < or = 0.05), or 400 ppm (p < or = 0.05); and d) an increased incidence of malignant schwannomas of peripheral nerves with a positive trend (p < or = 0.05) in males. The results of this mega-experiment indicate that APM is a multipotential carcinogenic agent, even at a daily dose of 20 mg/kg body weight, much less than the current acceptable daily intake. On the basis of these results, a reevaluation of the present guidelines on the use and consumption of APM is urgent and cannot be delayed.

Seriously, i'll bet that a 200 calorie Pepsi is much better for you health wise than a 0 calorie Diet Pepsi with Aspertame

Pretty much anything and everything these days causes cancer or some other serious life-threatening disease. I wouldn't worry myself too much about it.

This is probably like pretty much everything, consume a lot of it and it can give you cancer. Most people probably won't develop cancer.

I drank diet pop for a while, but have since given it up as it would make me feel sick (the ones with splenda were actually worse than the aspartame ones to me for some reason). Since then, drinking regular pop, I felt a lot better (and I really don't think I put on any weight from that). Regular pop can make me feel kinda sick if I drink a lot of it. Neither one can even remotely be called healthy, although for me personally, regular pop was better. I wish we could get pop with real cane sugar in it.

I don't know weather it actually causes cancer or not, but it gives me severe headaches if I consume anything more then a tiny amount so I avoid it.

..noticed the same thing. was using it on oatmeal and ended up with anxiety attacks. I recall reading in Aviation Week a few years ago commerical pilots are cautioned about possible side effects and are encouraged not to consume it 8 hr.prior to or during a flight.

Well some people drink a lot of pop. Also, this can be found in a ton of foods these days, even so called healthy foods (non-fat yogurt, low/non-fat icre cream, oatmeal, and a lot more). People wanting to cut back on calories might end up ingesting a lot of this in various foods.

I do agree with you to an extent, people worry way too much about everything these days. I don't doubt thats a big cause of people's health issues.

I saw something about a study on diet sodas. People that drink diet soda are more likely to be obese than those that drink regular soda. Something to do with the supersweet diet sodas triggering a craving for sweets. Another reason not to drink them.
I had always heard aspartame causes seizures. Seizures, cancer, neither one of them is good.

Wait, which one is EQUAL? That's what I use now since Splenda caused me to have breakouts.

Equal is also Aspartame.

I personally use Splenda/sucralose like it was going out of style. I don't know where I'd be without it (actually I do know; I'd be 80 pounds heavier just like I was two years ago). I'm sure everyone will start telling us at some point that Splenda causes cancer, but honestly it's the lesser of the "evils" in my eyes, if you want to call it that. Sugar just isn't an option, and I pretty much avoid it at all costs. (I don't have anything against Aspartame either, I just happen to like Splenda better.)

I drink about a 2-liter bottle worth of diet soda every day and run marathons. Nor have I ever had a seizure.

The sun also gives you cancer, only go outside at night.

the key finding is that even quite small daily doses of aspartame administered over a lifetime are associated with a range of different types of cancers in rats.

the smallest daily dose of aspartame that led to cancer in rats in this study (20 mg/kg) is lower than what many people would be consuming every day.

(the level of consumption for humans which is - or was - thought to be safe is 40 to 50 mg/kg per day according to a quick google search)

so the study raises the possibility that the "safe" or "approved" aspartame levels for daily consumption for humans might not be so safe afterall...

But remember, rats are a lot smaller than a person. That is not to say that this study does not have any validity in that aspartame does cause cancer at high consumption... but then again, as people have mentioned... everything causes cancer. Did you know that life itself causes cancer? (cell mitosis leads to mutation... which can cause cancer).

My conclusion on this matter? Same thing my mother used to tell me.

Too much of anything (even good) is probably bad for you.

I drink diet soda, but I try not to drink too much. I like going to the beach and being in the sun, but you better bet that I'm going to buy the biggest SPF sunscreen that I can find. I eat BBQ, but try to keep down the charcoal parts (carcinogenic).... list goes on.

Keep a balance and just enjoy life. I can promise you that you will die someday. For sure.
