Aspartame free Diet Pepsi is undrinkable

Pepsi changed the formula recently to replace aspartame with sucralose. The problem is that sucralose has a vile aftertaste, which hangs around for a long time after each sip. I know we shouldn't be drinking diet soda anyway, yeah yeah, but I am positive pepsi is going to lose customers because of this.

I can no longer drink the stuff. I opened a can yesterday not knowing it was new and after a few sips realized it was (I had tried it previously, too) and down the sink it went. In a way I'm glad, because now Pepsi has made it so I cannot drink diet pepsi at all, which is probably better for me.

They claim 75% of respondents prefer it:

Although that may be true I bet that the remaining 25% think it's undrinkable, so I think pepsi may end up net losing customers because of this switch.

So, drink regular Pepsi. Worried about the health effects? Drink less of it.

Dt. Mt. Dew has open arms, waiting to please you.

If they change the formula for this, I don't know what I'll do. I have the local grocery store order it in for me (it's quite uncommon in the socialist republic of canada).

My favorite diet drink is diet mt. dew. Diet A&W is good, too, as is Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper. I don't mind the Diet Pepsi with Sucralose too much...it's much the same.

Is that splenda? If so, I agree, that crap tastes like straight chemicals.

I gave up soda/diet soda completely 4 months ago. It has made a difference in the way I feel. First week off and on migraines from caffeine withdrawal. Now even the thought of caffeinated sodas makes me queasy. Also caffeine is a diuretic so a lot less trips to the bathroom which is a plus.

If I drink soda it is usually just sparkling water. No sugar, no caffeine, no side effects.

water is your friend. Not the mystery mix sweetened with gawd awful industrial designer concoction that has questionable safety.

Sucralose doesn't have an aftertaste IMO but it makes my throat itchy. You crazy!

Source please

Only theoretically, it can stimulate neurons to death similar to glutamate. Eating a balanced meal and several other things are neuroprotective against it.

You'd get a headache from all the blood flow trying to feed over stimulated neurons.

Aspartame though... breaks down into formaldehyde which is excreted slowly and hangs around major organs. Not good for you mang.

If you let aspartame diet soda sit in high heat (90F+), or long past its expiration the aspartame breaks down and it tastes bad. Thing is under stomach ph it breaks down into those chemicals instantly. Thats what you're actually ingesting.

Second, the claim that aspartame ingestion results in the production of methanol, formaldehyde and formate: These claims are factual. In the gastrointestinal tract aspartame is hydrolyzed to one of its component materials, methanol, as well as the two amino acids, phenylalanine and aspartic acid. This methanol is taken up by the cells of the body and metabolized first to formaldehyde and then to formate. The key information that is missing in the description by Ms. Markle is that the levels of ingestion are very modest. In fact, there are other foodstuffs that we ingest that supply as much and sometimes even more methanol; e.g., citrus fruits and juices, and tomatoes or tomato juice. There are even higher quantities of methanol ingested when ethanol is consumed. Thus, in the final analysis this methanol is the same as from other sources and in the quantities consumed from aspartame, it is readily and naturally metabolized via the one-carbon biochemical cycle to entirely innocuous and natural body components.

Third, the claim that the two amino acids, phenylalanine and aspartic acid have neurotoxic effects. This is true in certain individuals and in high enough doses. The only subpopulation of individuals potentially susceptible to adverse effects from phenylalanine is homozygous phenylketonurics and in this case, food itself with much higher levels of phenylalanine from the protein in the diets contributes much higher toxicity for these unfortunate individuals. For those individual phenylketonurics that want to

carefully control their intake levels of phenylalanine, they can do that by simply taking into consideration the amount of phenylalanine supplied by the aspartame product or, even more likely, simply refraining from use of these products. The USFDA requires that the aspartame product be labeled specially for phenylketonurics patients so that they will be aware of its presence in these products. As for the other amino acid in aspartame, the levels of aspartic acid ingested with aspartame use are many fold less than those levels responsible for causing adverse effects on the brain of animals and/or man. In fact, it is not clear that the experimentally derived data from animals is relevant to man. In any case, the levels of aspartic acid intake from aspartame are many fold below those needed to mediate neurologic effects.

I know its snopes but it matches my understanding of the subject. Why bother with it I mostly avoid it but if there is nothing to drink except diet soda I'm sure drinking it occasionally is fine. You wouldn't want to drink it it instead of water, IMO :p.

We switched to the line of Coke Zero products about 18 months ago. Coke Zero, Sprite Zero...I actually prefer the taste of them to the "real" stuff nowadays.

We don't buy ANY Pepsi products unless we're at a restaurant that only has Pepsi...then we usually get iced tea. :)

Fresca is my favorite diet soda. The original citrus-grapefruit not the peach or black cherry.

I don't care much for the black cherry...but the Peach Fresca is da bomb!
