I notice that I suddenly have a user account on my XP machine called "ASP.Net Machine A." Any wild guesses as to what this is??? Could some program I got off the internet have created this account? It is a limited account, password protected. I think I can just delete it, but I'd like to know what it is first and where it came from. I don't know that this belongs in networking, but then again I am not sure where it would belong. I do have Norton Antivirus running. Thanks. RW

That is the account that the .NET framework runs all of it's code under. Don't delete it or .NET based things (like IIS aspx stuff or any .net programs) will not run. The account was installed along with the .NET Framework when it was installed -- this usually happens with Windows Update and such -- without your knowledge. It's a-okay to have there.

Thanks Randal. I was starting to suspect .NET was involved -- this asp.net showed up right after I did the latest windows update for .NET, and now I see this user id is showing up on other machines as well.

One slightly annoying quirk -- since I am the only user set up on this machine, my system used to just bypass the welcome screen and get me straight to the desktop. Now I have to click on my user name first (even though I'm still the only user that is listed.) Is there a way around this? I tend to just mindlessly install all the Microsoft recommended updates, but in this case I suddenly have a minor nuisance in exchange for something (.Net) that has unclear benefits for me. I might just do a system restore to before I did the update.

OK, the microsoft powertoy Tweakui has my machine back to the way I want it (I think) -- I just told it not to show ASPNET on the welcome screen (no great loss, since it wasn't showing up anyway) and now I don't have to bother with the welcome screen.

This still seems odd to me -- I don't think it is unreasonable for me to be worried that a User account suddenly shows up from out of nowhwere. Further, looking at the .net upgrade docs, I don't see any mention or warning that this will happen. I wonder if there is a bug in the upgrade -- I had NET 1.0 before, and this didn't happen. Maybe they forgot to hide the Asp.Net account when they did the 1.1 upgrade.

I had this issue today as well. A pain in the butt, especially on the startup, as you mention.

I'll have to get tweakui to fix this - I'm surprised that the update allowed the problem.

I like to do "all" the windows updates too - but this one was a real problem (from a convenience point of view)
