Hello everyone...

I was wondering if any of you have had the chance to install the 'ASN.1 Vulnerability Patch' (MS04-007), for XP Home SP1 yet?

If so, does this patch seem to work properly? Without causing any problems or additional security issues?

Given that there aren't any workarounds (to my knowledge), I've decided to finally install the patch.

I'm always so hesitant when it comes to installing MS patches! From my personal experience, there's usually a 50/50 chance it will either fix the problem or make matters worse. :frown:

Thanks!

50% chance? Hmm... administering 40 Windows servers, I've only found a couple patches that have caused us any problems. Where did you get that 50/50 number from? Personal experience?

I'd have to agree with Mucman on this. I administer about 45 Windows servers and over 450 Windows clients and Windows patches hardly ever screw up a machine.

FYI we have installed the ASN patch on every machine with no problems.

Thank you for the quick response. Yes, from my own personal experience.

I suppose I am left with no other alternative. There are no workarounds, therefore the patch is my only answer. Unless someone can suggest a workaround?

Thanks!

Then you must have either rotten luck, or something else is wrong with your network ;). The only workaround is to disconnect your box from the Net so I don't think you have much choice. It hasn't caused our boxes any problems whatsoever.

I'm with Mucman and Mikecel; I have about 30 Windows servers and 400 clients and hardly ever have problems with Windows patches.

Likewise - I can think of only one patch on XP that 'needed' rollback in recent history (it was a VPN fix in May last year - even that was only to make the default security less tight.) Not bad bearing in mind around 30 fixes have been incorporated in that time too.

The CPR guys do a pretty excellent job of coordinating testing of patch dependencies to prevent introduction of other bugs - shame people bitch they take too long to issue fixes, ASN.1 is a great example of this btw!

Which patches have you had trouble with shadowbot?

If you have trouble with updates or service packs please keep two things in mind:
1. It is always a free support call to Microsoft for these issues.
2. You probably suck.
