This does kind of apply to seti since the box I'm adding will be a seti only system. Hopefully it'll be up and running before this weekend is over.:)

I have win98 first edition and have been using midpoint lite for my ICS. The only problem is it only works with my D-Link nics and I need something that will allow me to use other nics as well.

I thought I read somewhere that you could manually configure win98 to share a dialup connection but couldn't find it with a search. I did find where people said that you couldn't so I'm in the dark here.

I don't really want to buy anymore software but if I have to I'll upgrade to ME or 2000. If there is any free software that'll let me do it then it would be nice if someone could let me know. Thanks.:D

Why not consider going to 98SE?
It doesn't care what NICs you are using.

With 98se and ME do you have to run it on every machine on the network or can it run on just the one with net access? I thought if I were going to upgrade my OS I'd just go with the newest one out. Thanks for the speedy response.:)

among things SE added to 98 is the internet shared connection.
I've never used it but I know its a service you add in network properties on the linked comp.
Then I guess you point other comps to use the sharing comp as a proxy, by using its IP or name.

No, you just need to install it on the one 'server.' The clients can be 95, 98, ME etc.

My only question is for the SETI people though..will SETI clients flush through directly through 98SE ICS, or does one need to use SETI Que?

I know how to do this with the Dnet clients, but I'm not sure on SETI.

If you can use it, I have a couple of the Win98SE upgrade CDs over Win98.

Let me know.

For a while at home I had a 98 standard box that I used as my internet connection. I was to lazy to reformat the thing and reload with SE since I was slowly building a replacement box anyway. I ended up using Proxy+ for the ICS and such. They have a free version that allows you to connect I think 3 clients and limits your cache size to 1MB, but other than that, it is fully enabled.

Hi blade_47, Yes, 98SE or ME only need to be on the system that connects to the Internet. The other computers can be any flavor of Win9x with any NIC. They will flush WUs through the "server" box without having a Queue on the server. I have SetiDriver on the client; thus, it has its' own cache queue.

You must be feeling heat from the "Trio", heh? :):D:):D

Good luck!

PS. Win Me is selling for about $50 at a number of places and might be the best way to get ICS.

Adul, I've already tried it and could never get it to work. Does it work at all with dialup?

Viztech, thanks I may want a copy I'll let you know.

Thanks everyone for the speedy response. This same question has been posted in the networking forum for 19+ hours and has yet to get a response. I guess this is one of the benefits to being on the team.:)

JWMiddleton, yeah you guys are flying up behind me. I remember when you all decided to race to 1000 and I thought about joining but was a good ways ahead and thought it wouldn't be fair. Boy was I wrong!!:) I'm only adding a P2-233@350mhz so it won't be much but I had some spare parts and thought what the heck I'd try to hold off the onslaught a little longer if possible.:D

You ain't kidding. I posted several questions in networking and it took a long time to get a response, and when I did it was apparent they didn't really read the post about the problem, and wasn't all that helpful. :Q

I post the same questions here, wham, bam, thank you m'am, it was answered quickly and intelligently. :D

That's has been what I have found, especially in networking.
I never have found a real good networking forum on the web. That was one of my attractions to TA and this forum. Many network pros run DC, and hang out here.

Blade-

Let me know on the software. It looks like you have numerous choices to solve your problem/
