asking for a raise

so i want to ask for a raise at work and i have justifications and reasons. i just have a question about the timing of when i should ask. at my company, i have to turn in my 2004 performance evaluation at beginning of january. in february i discuss my evaluation with my supervisor and i'm told what my raise is based on performance and inflation. however, i know that raise won't be substantial because most of it will be inflation based, which most companies like to play off as being based on performance.

so when is the best time to ask for a raise? should i schedule an appointment before the evaluation discussion to ask for a raise? should i negotiate a raise during the evaluation discussion if i'm not happy with whats offered? or should i schedule an appointment to discuss a raise sometime after the performance evaluation discussion... and if so, how long after the performance evaluation discussion?

Does your company have schedules on when the raises are paid out? Your manager might not have much input into the actual rate you get, but the HR department might have a bigger part of the decision making process. If this is the case, your manager can listen to your desires, but it may not go too far.

if you are that important of an employee just turn in your 2 week notice. i did this because i actually planned on getting a new job and i got a $2.50 an hour raise to stay.

Evaluation time is the best time. Dispute your evaluation with HR if you don?t feel it is an honest representation of your work ethic.

it depends on when the paperwork for your raise is done. if you are told what your raise is during your eval, the paperwork probably went through a month before. if your company works like that you should talk to your boss early on if you're gonna have any chance of getting what you ask for.
