Asking for a promotion!

An extension of my "Asking for a raise" thread http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=38&threadid=1612864

Today I got an interesting call. A friend of mine called me up at work and was like "Didnt you do X before?" I told him that was an understatement.

He told me to look online at a jobs website and I found a position that I have excellent experience in and would be perfect for!

The only problem: Its with my current employer.

So applying for the job and quitting upon getting it isnt a good idea.

Anyone else ever see a position in your own company that has presented itself that you'd like to jump on?

I filled out an application already and I'm going to ask HR tomorrow to consider me for the position. I'd be moving up from a technical position to management and I'd love to hear the experiences of people who have tried to move up.

Thanks!

It's fine to ask HR about it, but even better is to have someone who knows you put in a plug with the hiring manager.

You need to separate yourself from the outside applicants so exploit your connections in the company to get on the inside track.

I had a VERY similar thing happen.. i was contacted by a recruiter for an open position on MY OWN team(unbeknownst to him) that paid 10-25% more than I currently made.

I was pissed because I was leaving that team for a more desirable postion(so this was for my old position). I spoke to my boss about it and she was very understanding. she said she'd review and make the appropriate adjustments. This month is when I get my raise - no idea how much yet, though.

It happens all of the time - find a better job in the same company and you move up to it.

No reason for you to quit your job and then come back in as a new hire.
