Asked for two photo IDs to buy a pack of cigarettes

Now I knew I was about to get owned (NY state has lovely prices), and sure enough, $7.69 for a pack of Camels! :disgust:

Cashier asks for my ID, I pull it out then he asks for another photo ID. The only other things in my wallet were credit cards and insurance card. He then said sorry I just can't sell you them. Luckily I realized I had my work badge in my card so I got that and then got my smokes.

But that is just stupid and wrong! Had it been on a weekend or evening, I wouldn't have had my badge, and that's the only other photo ID I have. Am I gonna need a passport soon to buy cigs and beer?

After I left I realized I should've asked the kid if it was a company policy or some new law. Hopefully it's just that dumb gas station so I can avoid them in the future.

Company policy. I'd ask you for another ID too if it meant the difference in receiving a several hundred dollar fine. 2nd Offense means you lose the right to sell tobacco for 6 months.

Not rolling your own anymore? ;)

Yeah that is a ridiculous policy. Never heard of that before.

<insert "fuck smokers" and "cigs should be $50 a pack" stupid post here>

Fuck smokers.

But thats still REALLY stupid.

If I was smart enough to fake one ID, I could probably fake two of them.

More than likely they only do it for people they feel might be "suspicious." So if you look like you're over 18 and have a driver's license from that state, I wouldn't worry about it.

Sounds like you're from out of state? That's probably why they asked for the second ID.

Edit: maybe that was a bad assumption

My tin ran out last night and I didn't have enough $ on hand to get one this morning. With the new prices here, rolling with Bali Shag (which is way more premium tobacky than 1LB bags of shit Gambler and such) you get a cartons worth of cigs for less than the price of three packs of store bought cigs!!

That's the thing, I didn't think the average person had several photo IDs, especially carrying them with them always.

edit: Yeah I forgot to mention I still don't have a NY state license. Do you think the policy is out of state IDs require a second ID? I've had that happen once before here last year but anything with my name on it was sufficient there (like a debit/credit card). Much more reasonable than another photo ID.

At least the kid didn't need 10 minutes to look at my ID. I swear every old dumbass cashier at Walmart looks at my ID forever, then finally asks "uhh, is there a birth date on here?" or "I'm not seeing the expiration date here, so I don't think I can...". There is not much info on an ID and they are generally laid on similarly. Other people don't seem to have such a hard time finding a few sets of numbers on a little card.

Most likely a policy. The grocery store I used to work in stopped selling alcohol to people without NYS driver's licenses because it complicates things when cashiers have to verify the differing security features from out-of-state IDs.

I didn't think fake IDs were that common. I've never seen one or heard of a single person with them. Everyone I knew underage got their alcohol and tobacco usually (a) go into store and buy it normally, hope they don't ask for ID, if they do just say you don't have it and leave (b) have someone of age buy it.

I've seen some places scan your driver's license and it reads your DOB from the magnetic strip. Seems like that would be better way to do it. It was built into their cashier terminal... just about every place now has all kinds of computerized terminals and scanners.

Those terminals aren't free. Fake IDs, especially if you're in an area close to a college, are decently common.

Also, IIRC not all states have a magnetic strip containing the license information.

Anyone that willingly pays $8 for a pack of cigarettes loses the right to claim that anything related to said purchase is "stupid and wrong".

No.

What do you need cigarettes for in NYC? Just step outside and inhale a passing bus or taxi.

Why the anti-smoking hate? Not like after they smoke they rape a baby and eat a live puppy.

Cigarettes are made from baby souls.

I thought they used aborted babies in the mix too?

hahaha

Anyway liqour laws are stupid, too. I don't look 20 AT ALL and yet i am once in a blue moon asked for ID, though normally by a younger person probably without experience and a neophytic fear.

It's not the smoking itself I hate, I used to smoke and I believe anyone has the right to commit suicide one puff at a time. It's the willingness to fork over the price that I can't comprehend. When I quit in '99 smokes were about $12 a carton here. Now it's $60. In NYC it's close to $80. Eventually the smoker should be smart enough to understand that they're just going to keep raising taxes until a pack costs as much as a new car. Anyone that's standing in line hoping to be able to shell out $8 for cancer sticks should not look upon being asked for ID as the incomprehensible part of the process. He really needs to look as his own involvement as the part that's hard to explain.
