did it originate from the US as mexican officials speculate it did?
It's going to be tough to find out exactly where it originated from especially while mexico is in the state it is in. I just read an article stating they found the earliest known carrier, a young boy who lived on a pig farm, which would make sense.

how did the flu cross over to humans?
Human's are capable of catching bird/swine flu directly from the animal. I will ask on the swine part, but I know avian flu requires some of the blood from the infected animal to get deep inside your lungs. Avian flu can be transmitted person to person as is, but the cells avian flu is capable of infecting are the ones at the very deepest part of your lungs and nearly impossible to get to via you inhaling someone's sneeze (for example). The concern with avian flu was that it would mutate to be able to infect the upper sections of the lungs, as this strand of swine flu seems to be capable of.

I'm guessing I should cancel my vacation to Mexico... Puerto Vallarta on May 22nd...
I would recommend against it.

Was the flu originally avian and jumped to pig then to human, chaning along the way?
No one yet knows. We do know it contains 8 genetic markers from human flu, and 2 from avian flu. That's going to be one of the largest questions left after this is over because Mexico had never had a case of Avian flu.

IS this another government/military bio terrorism experiment?
While I know it's a joke, the question has been asked before, and the answer given to me is that this strain is a highly unlikely combination of flu types, beyond that would be speculation. Personally I see no evidence thta would support it being from a government or terrorist organization, mostly that there is nothing to gain at the moment, except for maybe pharmaceutical companies.
