Because of the line of work my family is in (biological decontamination), I have access to a couple of individuals that know a large amount about swine flu and pandemic diseases in general. If anyone has any legit questions I'd be happy to pass them on.

Some of the more simple questions I'll be able to answer on my own, the more technical ones I'll pass on.

Skeeve37: Oh god I ate pork yesterday before I knew about swine flu!

HanneloreEC: Without duct tape I can't seal the door to keep out swine flu but I can't get duct tape without going outside! Help!

paulyshorefan: How long until the swine flu reaches me here in Madagascar?

crackmonkey74: swine flu is god's punishment for the ACLU and lesbians and 9/11 and nanobots!

Twilight753: I fell down the stairs and there was a crack and a jagged white thing is sticking out of my arm guys is this swine flu?

Wigu: @Untoward No, That sounds like Syphilis, not swine flu. What did you say you did with a pig?

2011SeniorsRule: My dad said flu vaccines are linked to autism, so to be safe from swine flu I'm trying to lick an autistic kid.

Was the flu originally avian and jumped to pig then to human, changing along the way?

It's going to be tough to find out exactly where it originated from especially while mexico is in the state it is in. I just read an article stating they found the earliest known carrier, a young boy who lived on a pig farm, which would make sense.

how did the flu cross over to humans?

Human's are capable of catching bird/swine flu directly from the animal. I will ask on the swine part, but I know avian flu requires some of the blood from the infected animal to get deep inside your lungs. Avian flu can be transmitted person to person as is, but the cells avian flu is capable of infecting are the ones at the very deepest part of your lungs and nearly impossible to get to via you inhaling someone's sneeze (for example). The concern with avian flu was that it would mutate to be able to infect the upper sections of the lungs, as this strand of swine flu seems to be capable of.

I would recommend against it.

No one yet knows. We do know it contains 8 genetic markers from human flu, and 2 from avian flu. That's going to be one of the largest questions left after this is over because Mexico had never had a case of Avian flu.

While I know it's a joke, the question has been asked before, and the answer given to me is that this strain is a highly unlikely combination of flu types, beyond that would be speculation. Personally I see no evidence thta would support it being from a government or terrorist organization, mostly that there is nothing to gain at the moment, except for maybe pharmaceutical companies. :p

Whimps! Just wear a surgical mask while you're at the beach and you'll be fine.

What are common signs of the swine flu? I was reading an article that said back in 1976 people died from it without feeling ill. I mean, will a fever always be associated with it?

Thus far symptoms are exactly the same as a normal flu. It is believed the deaths are caused by a cytokine storm (wiki it).
