An interesting article was on the front page of the WSJ today.

Source: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702303379204577474743811707050.html?mod=WSJ_hpp_LEFTTopStories#articleTabs%3Darticle

The article states an already well-known fact that Asians are the most highly-educated and highest-earning immigrant group in the US. Of course, the article lumps all Asians together; Indians, Chinese, Koreans, and Japanese.

It is already known that Indians are the highest educated and also highest-earning minority group in the US.

(here: http://india.nydailynews.com/newsar...americans-lead-all-in-income-education-survey
and here: http://www.forbes.com/2009/02/24/bo...pinions-contributors_immigrants_minority.html)

Either way, white/black/hispanic Americans are left wondering what's going on as their kids are busy playing baseball/football/basketball, drinking alcohol, and fornicating instead of focusing on studies, self-discipline, and the future.

It has also been proven that Asians have it much harder than their Caucasian peers to get into the top schools (http://newamericamedia.org/2011/07/the-hard-part-is-getting-in.php). Many of the Ivy Leagues etc. discriminate against Asians despite their exceptional credentials. So, instead of it being merit-based, whites can get into college more easily than Asians who do much better than them! And they whine about affirmative action? hahahha..

IME, they're highly educated with impressive degrees, but boy can't they think outside the box. Very little creativity! (not all of course, but majority of Asian/Indian immigrants/B1B2 that I've dealt with in the Silicon Valley software development industry since ~2003). Eastern European immigrants on the other hand are like a u-curve, either completely incompetent with some diploma mill degree/experience, or geniuses who can solve problems that no one even attempts to.

Just my two cents. YMMV.

Agree to a certain extent. That is the result of rote learning. The plus side is that the foundation is solid. They don't graduate college and forget to do Algebra like most "creative" people. Further, if you take a normal distribution of employees in the tech industry, the mean lies skewed towards solid left-brain types rather than the creative types. Of course, exceptions exist, yet one should not make their career choice based on that. After all, those "exceptions" are merely that, lying at least two standard deviations away from the mean. Thus, if one were to explain to a child on what would constitute a career path that is financially and intellectually rewarding, yet somewhat stable, one would be hard-pressed to argue in favor of creativity over mathematical rigor. The key point to remember is that none precludes the other.

That is primarily why the US education system is in doldrums. People here don't want to face the reality that hard-work and perseverance are key to academic success and instead believe throwing inordinate amounts of resources at the problem will miraculously solve it.

Perhaps it has to do with the top 0.001% wealthy and educated class that come to America, to get away from the pissed poor Indian education, society, health, lifestyle, and culture.

Except you have Asians who come from the 3rd world Asian countries and are able to become successful upon arrival also. The top 0.001% typically have the financial ability to go back to the mother country after earning their degree(s).

I honestly believe that affirmative action is wrong.
Agree wholeheartedly.

One can't generalize that Asians are smarter or all are hard workers. IMHO, most immigrants that come to North America from overseas are generally motivated individuals or have financial means to relocate to a developed nation.

<---- Asian

I grew up around lots of asian in so ca (costa mesa about 1/3 asian) and can tell you you can put a FOB asain in any place USA and them or their kids will be millionaires in short order. Only seen it like a dozen times. My best friend in HS parents are from Vietnam owned a nail salon and and him and his sister are both specialist doctors one an orthopedic surgeon the other a radiologist. Not bad for coming here with clothes on their back.

I saw why too. worked thier asses off 24/7/

Honestly we didn't have to many Indians only Indians I knew was a chemistry prof who I called Commander Data, after Data on star-trek, his name was Data, anyway he was a PhD..so... again not bad.

Well I am Asian myself, so hope I don't get flame for this. :)

All immigrants work their ass off the first, 2nd generation. Give us a couple of more generations and see if we don't become fat and lazy like the rest of American with entitlement mentality.

They never go back. I became good friends with Commander Data,my Indian Chemistry prof, and he tells me about the trips 'back'. He tosses 20-30K around and can't wait to come back the USA after his greedy assed relatives get done with him.

I think the results of the study just come down to the fact that Asian immigrants will work harder to get ahead than most native Americans. I’m a US born of Scots-Irish decent, and we sometimes talk about having an “American Work Ethic”, but since becoming friends with a woman born in Canton (China) who moved to the states with her family I recognize that we just flat out don’t have a work ethic compared to most Chinese.
My friend’s father is a Chinese cook, and father and mother both worked six days a week to pay for my friend’s tuition for a business degree. Just out of college she is now a buyer for a US auto parts distributor. She splurged and just bought herself the first TV she ever owned. Her budget was around $200 because she is saving up her money to buy her father and mother a new car. My (granted limited) experience with Asian immigrants are that they are amazingly hard working people who also greatly value their family, and will do what it takes to help each other succeed.

The Republicans, having roots in the Alexander Hamilton National Socialist Party (i.e., the Federalist Party) and the Henry Clay National Socialist Party (i.e., the Whigs), will probably pass another Asian Exclusion Act when Willard Romney comes to power.

That's a shame.

He probably changed his name to a good American one so you couldn't pin none of that crap on him anymore.

hey, since we're bragging :) let me share my own family's story who came to the U.S. 22 years ago as dirt-poor immigrants. My mom who was armed with a 6th grade education and 3 dollars in her pocket brought us 3 boys here 22 years ago. At first, my youngest brother and I (the middle child) each only had one pair of socks so we had to wash and dry them daily for school the next day. Now try to imagine people who were so poor and young that couldnt even afford Walmart socks, that were us.

Pass forward 22 years, my oldest brother is now a technical manager of the largest cooling tower company in the world. Those Shell commercials that we see on TV? yup, they are photoed and shot by my youngest brother. they are his products. About myself, I am not as successful as they are but managed to become a college math professor these past 15 years. Go Sooners!

this is why every time someone proclaims on the news that the American dream is dead it always makes me smile knowing they have no idea what they are talking about. Our family owes everything we now have to this Great, Mighty, and Fair nation. I teach my son every day how lucky he is to be born in this country and to remember silently salute the American flag no matter its size or where it is planted. It's our one and only flag that we salute.

This is not a surprise, it costs them a lot to get over here and study. I am in a college town, my friends live in an apt complex that has mostly graduate students. Vast majority are Asian, and you can see the money just by looking at the cars in the lot.

Edit: also those that come usually are very driven for a better life. Thus their family makes sure kids are working to be better no matter how much or little money they have.

So even without all the affirmation action/set aside/quota/freebies programs, Asians are still doing much better than other minority group (almost as well as whites as a whole group).

Just like the old saying, you can take the horse to the water but you can't make it drinks.

Great job. Very good to hear. And, of course, the American Dream is not dead. Maybe only for those that suck on the gov't teat (tit?). Odds are that you can't get ahead if you are dependent on gov't. There will be those occasional success stories where welfare helped someone out of poverty but for the most part, you are on it and stay on it.

So in other words Asians live out conservative values and leads them to success. No wonder liberals when liberals talk about minorities it is always about blacks, Hispanics, and women.
