I know it's all "OT manly" to scoff at anyone who would be turned off by this, and all "culturally progressive" not to raise even one limp finger in opposition to skinning animals alive and other brutally retrograde practices other countries revel in, but fuck this shit.

Perknose I think it is in fact dead. I agree skinning animals alive is horrible and I would never buy fur for that reason but they drive a small metal spike into the brain of the fish (if I recall correctly)

Actually dead or not - no thanks. If I'm going to eat something, I want it to look tasty, not nauseating.

This reminds me of an episode of Bizarre Food where (whatever the host's name is) tries some form of fish that's supposedly more poisonous than puffer fish. It had spikes on it's back, and they show them cutting the spikes off of the live fish with a pair of scissors. You can see the fish is in very obvious agony. D:

I'm not one to think of all the poor little critters that have to die to bring food to the table, but good God man, don't purposely make something suffer just to show off. I can't imagine that fish tastes any better half-fried than it does full-fried.

Really? We have supermarkets filled with prepackaged cuts of all sorts of different meats, fish and shellfish stuck inside tiny tanks, wasting away, and dead fish lying around on ice. On some level that might seem as brutal.

Now skinning more cognitively developed animals alive is more cruel to me, but at the point where our country essentially mass produces meat on a very cold and industrial level, it's hard to be especially critical.

Last time I got a fish from chinatown, it was still alive when I got home. I saw him get the fish, strike it and everything. While i was seasoning it, the tale started to move and you saw something beating something thumping in rythmn. Kind of freaky

It is so American to respond to something like this with nothing but utter indignation.

And that indignation stems from an arrogance internalised that goes unnoticed by most Americans.

Wow... that's totally unnecessary. Do you really need to see the damn thing still trying to breathe (voluntary or otherwise)? Seems a mite sadistic. Eat the meat. Just kill the damn thing first. Absolutely no reason for this.

Happy Birthday. 😎

i go fishing a lot. this is somewhat of a normal thing to see on a fishing pier or boat when people are chunking bait or chum. half the bag is still moving. the ones that dont get sliced up get a giant hook in their back or lip and get thrown in the water to hopefully get engulfed by a big fish.

crabs/lobsters are cooked while still alive and shellfish (oysters and sometimes clams) are eaten while still alive but im assuming the lack of eyes and a body dont set off peoples alarms like fish do.

its just a fucking fish

Have the people squawking with indignation ever eaten anything alive? >.> Animals eat each other alive all the time, and we are animals. Big deal.

What? Putting dead fish on ice is comparable to butchering, cooking, and eating a fish while it's still alive? Wow.

Animals eat each other alive all the time, and we are animals. Big deal.

We're only animals if we choose to be. There's a huge difference between eating something alive because you're too stupid to know better and eating something alive because watching it flop around gives you sadistic giggles. Keeping it alive is not only unnecessary, it actually takes more effort. That's just sick.

SadisticHairStylest, why not just go fishing, filet the fish, and immediately cook it. I'm not sadistic enough to cook my fish while half of it was still alive, though I've had it very frequently where the fish had been alive less than an hour prior to eating
I haven't prepared fish in over 10 years, since before grandpa died, when we used to go fishing. Don't really remember how to.
Nor would I know techniques involved to serve the fish as shown in video.

What? Putting dead fish on ice is comparable to butchering, cooking, and eating a fish while it's still alive? Wow.

Well if there was a creature that caught humans en masse and ate them, I must say I would be pretty sickened by an industry that caught and filleted humans en masse, shipped them everywhere, and displayed them in markets. What's shown in the video is worse, sure, but at what point do you draw the line so you can condemn how others eat?

Nice that you like to put on airs about how 'different' humans are.

Wrong.

Eating something alive because I'm too stupid to know better? How can you get any more ethnocentric than that. Hah. You think human beings across the world are either morons or sadistic if they consume their food alive? I eat oysters alive. I've eaten fish alive. I've had live shrimp as well. You can be damn sure if I'm hungry enough I'll eat small mammals, lizards and anything else alive too.

The only reason I wouldn't eat something larger alive is because it poses too much of a threat while alive, and therefore killing it to consume it is probably necessary.

I don't understand, when did humanity start putting on airs about their food and decide to denigrate others for how they eat it? Try stepping a little bit outside your Western egocentric world and take a good long look.
