Asbestos candle wicks?

I was looking at the portable heating candles used to heat the buffet containers at the restaurant I work at. I noticed the wick looked fibrous and not cotton like the normal wicks on our small table candles. It looked like asbestos fibers like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Asbestos_with_muscovite.jpg.

What other white materials besides cotton and asbestos do companies used to make wicks? If companies use asbestos wicks, that would be bad. I found out the asbestos ban by the EPA was overturned by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals (New Orleans). Why would the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals overturn the ban on asbestos if it is a known carcinogen.

Uh, asbestos is a fire retardant... what makes you think its being used in candle wicks? lol....

If it can wick the oil, then it doesn't matter if it burns.

No they are not. I have not been able to find any information on asbestos being used in candle wicks on Google.

I was wrong in my assumption, as indeed asbestos can be used as candle wick, and was indeed used for this purpose before it was found to be hazardous to your health.. but I cannot find any information on asbestos being used in cande wicks currently.

Most of the information out there has to do with wire-cored wicks, and their lead content.

fiberglass can be used for wicks

I'm not sure what they use in those sterno / canned heat things. Probably just a type of cotton yarn with long fibers.

Companies that use asbestos candle wicks are not gonna advertise their candles as containing asbestos. Companies do not label their products as asbestos containing because they are not required to, doing so would hurt sales. People just dont realize that a lot of products still contain asbestos since a lot of people think asbestos is no longer used, hence not much information on asbestos products used today.

Asbestos is all-natural...it can't be bad for you.

😉

(and yes, the asbestos issue has been WAY overblown)

not all asbestos is dangerous.. but they blanket it and put it as all asbestos.. so techincally i can see why teh court overturned it.

I believe Asbestos is ok as long as its not in aerosol form.

😕 What the heck are you talking about?

What I remember reading was the manufacture of asbestos is legal for certain purposes but not in a form that is inhalable.

no, any type of asbestos is legal in the USA today and products will not be labeled as containing asbestos, that would hurt sales.

Something I dug up. I guess it isn't illegal at all.

only the fifth circuit has said the ban is illegal, if none of the other circuits has said anything the EPA could still regulate in the other jurisdictions.

looks like the EPA overstepped it's legislative mandate.
