AS5 on Video Card

I was just wondering, can I put AS5 on a video card GPU core?

I have a 7800GT (evga copper cooler one), and I just want it on to lower the temps a bit. I know it wont have a BIG effect on temps I would just like it on there for the hell of it. I think the RAM uses thermal pads so I don't have to worry about them right?

I would clean off the old stuff first (i know to use 90% alcohol or something like that)

I wouldn't have to be "carful" since it's a vid card? (i'm only doing it on the core as the ram has those pads...i think)

Yeah, be sure and only put the goop on the gpu chip and only a little. You don't want to get messy with that stuff or your card will be all shorted out.

AS5 works great on GPUs...I used it when installing my VF700 on my 6600gt

Just be careful to not get it on anything BUT the core (which i almost did, but cleaned it up, and its working fine)

So how much AS5 are we talking about here, a small dot in the center then spread out, or more than a small dot?

I would assume the same as with a CPU. Use a small drop... just enough to cover it completely when spread out. Correct me if I'm wrong

Yeah you want as thin a layer as possible so that you can assure full contact with the heatsink and to prevent heat from building up due to too much thermal compound being applied . . .

use a thin haze. for the gpu, since it's smaller than a cpu core protector in area, i think you should spread it out yourself, making sure it's all on top of the gpu and very thin, oterwise god knows how much wll come off the sides and bridge some transistors.

Now, I have another question. What type of Alcohol can you use to clean it off.
In my house I have 91% Isopropol Alcohol (rubbing alcohol?). Is that ok to use? I think I also have 70% too, but I though it was better to use the higher %'s.

yea, dab a tiny bit of the alcohol on a paper towel, and proceed to carefully wipe the gpu clean
dont want a lot of the alcohol, just a little, and do it again with another towel, barely wet, keep doing this until its clean
let it dry for a few minutes, and then use the AS5
put a drop of AS5 on the GPU (a tiny drop) and proceed to use a razor blade to thin it out. it should be microthin, i mean, THIN.. thinner then paper type thin. the weight of a cooler will spread it if its not super thin

other than that, piece of cake 😉

I dont think its worth it and i really dont want you to mess up that card. unless you know what your doing btw by taking of the heatsink you are voiding the warranty.

nope, he wouldn't be voiding any warranty, and as long as he didn't fry anything by bridging connections with the paste, he'd be fine.
evga's warranty allows overclocking and the replacement of the stock cooler. so putting different paste on would be fine. its not modding the equipment in any way.

but yea, i didn't think about the heat issue.. what are your temps that make you think its too hot?
i have the 7800GT CO (SE), and my temps are perfect in my opinion. under 40ºC idle, under 60ºC load. thats in extreme situations as well. when i was testing with overclocks (before giving up since my card is not overclock capable 🙁 ), I never breached the 60ºC level.

I never actually used the card yet. Look at my sig and you'll see. Motherboard didn't come yet and neither did the RAM. I know the RAM already shipped but the motherboard is suppose to this week.

I don't know what my temps will be. I'll just do it for the hell of it ya know? I figure I might be able to drop the temps a little. I want the lowest possible temps with out haveing to use third party cooling and i figure that this is the way to do it. Don't you agree? I know alot about computers and putting AS5 on the GPU was one of the few things that I didn't really know much about. So I came and asked the all knowing anandtech forum people. So I thank you now for your help and if you have anything else to add to this AS5 on GPU you only have a little more time before I do it, probably tonight.
