AS5 on Video Card (Another Question!)

Alright, now that I got my VF-700 it's time to embark on that AS5 on GPU thing again.

So, tell me how much AS5 should I put on? (give me something to compare in size with, like grain of rice)

I'll take a pic to show you after I do it to see if you like it.
 
grain of rice (long white rice 😛) should do it. spread it around as evenly as you can. It's not rocket science and eventualy pressure and heat will even it out to make a better contact.

The only problem I have with using AS5 on video cards is in my experiance it seems to need more contact pressure than AS3 to work correctly. Video card retaining springs tend to be weak, however your VF-700 no doubt has a better spring than stock.
 
You need to spread it around, you do not just put a dap in the center then squish it with the heatsink hopeing it will distribute itself. It is not rocket science either, you are worried too much about this.

Spread it evenly, just enough to cover the GPU so you cant read any info on it and cant see the GPU surface. Thats all it takes. What you have taken pictures of is about right, now start spreading it around, and if you need more, use it. Most of its going to end up on your finger tip anyways.

I don't use my fingers, you use a razerblad/credit card i though? (unless it's a joke).
 
You need very very little. You want to be able the see the lettering through the AS5. If you can't see the lettering it's too thick. AS5 only fills in microscopic inperfections, the excess acts as a thermal barrier if its too thick. CPU heatsinks do a good job of squeezing out the excess but video cards don't have a lot of pressure on the core.
 
LOL, just put the heatsink on it already!! I can barely see the lettering and base color of the GPU. You got it done.

You voided your warranty anyway's by removing the OEM HS/fan 😛

eVGA covers replacing the HSF! 😀
 
I did it, I used the inside out bag method to remove enough until I could see the lettering of Nvidia.

Now I should have put on the RAM sinks before I put the HSF on, but I got the OCZ copper ones instead and they didn't come in the mail yet. I bet I'll have a hell of a time getting those on.

Thing looks cool, finally did it, not all I have to do it again on my other 7800GT.

And BTW, my warrenty was not voided as I have an evga video card and there warrenty covers custom HSF stuff.
 
I just relized that i'm going to have to remove the HS to get the RAM sinks on. Sh!t, oh well. If you don't use the video card, and you remove the HS do you still have to reapply AS5 on the GPU core? or could I just take a bag and just respread the stuff thats on there now?

Sorry, but you'll have to purchase a new video card. No re-applying AS5 on the same Video card allowed. Did'nt you read the AS5 COA info? It's pretty well labled on the tube stipulating multiple usage on one video card is not allowed.

What I really want to know, is after all this, did we actually gain anything on an OverClock? Of course you will have to "Burn in" the AS5 installation. And that takes what, 3 days of use?

Probably wont gain anything, but the temps should drop a little. Every little bit helps running SLI.
 
I wont know for another week. Mobo didn't come yet, RAM didn't come yet but I know that both shipped. RAM is "out for dilivery" and Mobo is somewere on it's way to NY from TX.

So I technically never had it running in the first place. Guess well never know, but if I had to take a shot at it i'd say I gaind 10mhz at most.
 
Don't use bare fingers to spread AS. That will just contaminate the compound. Just for future reference.

After I took the one I installed off (yes I know it sounds stupid but I forgot to put RAM sinks on) it looked like the AS5 wasn't touching the VF-700 Copper base. I could see a square outline, but it wasn't a whole square, one of the coneres was missing from it. Does this mean I didnt use enough? or I didn't tighten it down enough?
