I was checking out some reviews on the 5950 Ultra which I am about to get because I am rich<(intended for rollo) and was wondering if since the the heat plates are held on by pins or screws and there arent any metal circuit thingies on the sides of the RAM, would I be able to use AS5 in between like if it was just a CPU core or something or would that be hazardous for my card? Thanks for any future help!

just be carful not to get it on anything that could short and you will be fine.

although it seems silly to buy such an expensive videocard at this point sense the prices will go down very shortly and considerably faster cards will be selling for what a 5950 goes for now. you may be rich but people don't stay rich by being careless with money. ;)

Im not rich at all its just that some guy on another thread was complaining about not being able to OC his 5950 Ultra very far and I responded with "damn rich people" and rollo said that he was going to go tell everyone that he is rich because he had such and such but anyways Im only spending $310 for this OEM 5950 Ultra which I am replacing with the 9800 Pro I am selling.

It's possible, but you should be extra careful when applying the as5 and when positionning the big Heatsink. Make sure it touches the memory chips and more important the amount of as5 should be just enough so that it won't go over the chips's edges when you press the sink back.

Yah Im thinking of spreading it just around then center and when I squeeze it down the excess should fill in the gaps on the edge but I think it'll work out just fine. How much better would this be as opposed to thermal tape or even AS thermal epoxy?

Whats your reasoning for selling 9800 Pro and getting 5950 Ultra? Considering that ATI has better Anti-Aliasing quality and performance and better AA+AF performance in most current games and is signficantly faster in more direct x 9.0 demanding games.....just curious.

Also it is true you might not be able to buy the new generation for $300, but usually after 2 months of them coming out they drop in price and level off at $300 for a while. However, you'll be paying for at least double performance with that money, not to mention the 5950 will probably dip well below $200 the week the new cards come out. So is it worth "burning" $100-$150 so you can play this top of the line card for March, April and thats it, especially considering you already have a 9800Pro which I bet you can only sell for $150 at best.

So basically you are gonna pay $300 Nvidia - $150 ATI salvage value = $150 extra for a card that is slower, and has worse image quality; and then your card will lose another $150 once the new cards come out in 2 months. That is basically wasting $300 in my opinion. Maybe you can explain your reasoning for this?

I get constant game crashes with my 9800 Pro even with several different driver version. This never happened when I first got it and each time I installed a different driver it worked perfect for the first couple of days and then went back to crashing. I just want to go back to good ole Nvidia because Ive never had a problem with them before. Ive already sold my 9800 Pro for $210 which I can still keep but I havent been playing any of my games due to the crashing to desktop problem and if I had to play like this for 2 whole months or more I would go crazy. I think I'll be ok if I just wait until later on to get a newer Nvidia. I can just get another card later its not like I have bills to pay I still live with my parents so I can afford to throw away a whole paycheck to a piece of hardware. I probably wont buy a new card after this until I start a new system though which will probably be in a year or so based on PCI Express.

did you make sure to clean your system of any previous drivers before installing the radeon and were you uninstalling your old drivers before installing new ones? if no to either of those, that was most likely your problem.

Yeah of course, I formatted my HD when I installed the 9800 Pro the first time and everytime after that I uninstalled the drivers before installing new ones. What I hate most is when XP installs its own drivers automatically when you start the computer before you get to install your own drivers, could this be the problem? Although I highly doubt it is the problem how would I go about disabling this feature for future installs?

When you uninstall the drivers and restart, a window will pop up saying "new hardware has been found and added" and then a new display will appear with 2 options to search for windows xp drivers and another to search by browsing from a folder or a CD, click Cancel. Then simply install the new driver which you have downloaded.

The fact that games crash on your ATI card isnt a suprise. The suprise is that it seems like for you it happens way too often and for most games rather than few. It is true: ATI do not have as stable drivers as Nvidia do and whenever they fix something with a new driver, a new problem appears with some old game goes that you play, so it's really frustrating but to me it doesnt happen that often. However, after having my Radeon 8500 since the times when Catalyst name wasn't even on ATI's mind, I can assure you i've had at least 10 separate game crashes (as in 10 separate games, and I dont know how many times lol), corruption and so on......but i guess i've come to live with it and accept it. Even now Colin McRae 4 crashes and simply doesn't work and in Far Cry the water and textures get corrupted at times.

On the other hand its hard to expect Nvidia cards or their drivers to be flawless either, but since I've never owned one I cannot tell you how much better their drivers are exactly, but I am sure those users also get crashes....What I can assure you is that my friend owned a Geforce 4 and he never had problems with it playing games, but hey one day the card fried. So yours and mine experiences with game crashes could be a minority or not, I cannot tell you since I don't have the exact facts.

Either way if driver issue has gotten to you, I understand. I just don't understand how people claim to say that ATI drivers have improved, because they haven't. With every major new game that comes out something always has to be fixed. The thing is that it doenst bother me because then I'll just play the games that don't crash or download a fix for those that do. If only ATI had bulletproof drivers, they would be unbeatable.

oh ya that can cause horable problems when it does that as you do wind up installing new drivers over old ones. ususaly xp prompts me when trying to auto install the drivers and i just hit cancel and install the right drivers after that. however on one install of xp i was having the issue of it not prompting and just installing the wrong drivers without my concent, i have no clue how that winds up happening, and the only way i have found to solve that is to deleate the folders it is installing from so that it doesn't have anything it can install.

RussianSensation, sounds like you have a lot of pent up aggression towards ati from the pre-catalyst days. i used nvidia cards back then but i worked on friends computers who used ati, so i know from experience that ati has come a long way with their drivers. personally, the only time i ever have had a game crash on my 9700pro is when i was alt-tabbing between a game and other stuff (usually another 3d app) and that only happened on certain driver revisions. i know there have been issues with certain games and such, but nothing that i have run into personally and i enjoy knowing that if i do run into one of these issues ati is always on the ball about fixing it. but just because a driver is problem free for one person does not mean it will be problem free for everyone, just go to nvnews.net and you can see plenty of people bitching about stability issues with nvidia's newer drivers.

Back to main topic, the AS5 will not run right? I believe it says so on their website. Again would this be the best possible solution compared to thermal tape and thermal epoxy? Thanks!

na, the stuff doesn't run. just keep the layer nice and thin like a haze over the chips so you can still see the writing underneth, that way you don't have to worrry about squeeseing any out on to anything that might short. also ya, as5 is will give you beter heat conduction than tape or epoxy.
