I had to get my motherboard replaced in my laptop and went to a local Authorized place to get it fixed, I gave them my tube of AS5 and told them to apply it.

Well I got it back today eager to see what AS5 can do over stock thermal Pad that comes with laptops and WOW

Same Ambient temperature, same table its on, same laptop feet, same plug, same game..ect

Playing Crysis for 30 min
(temps from Everest)
CPU -Old 85c New 65c
GPU- Old 68c New 61c

that's 20c difference on the CPU!

And 15 min after the Crysis run in Prime95 with the "In place large FTTs" I got it up to 73c and it wont go any higher! the number actually is moving around 71-73. This stuff is crazy.

This probably has little to do with AS5, but rather how much the thermal pads suck!

Any high quality thermal paste such as Tuniq TX-2/3, AC MX2/3, OCZ Freeze would have exhibited similar results.

I had a similar result when I took apart my laptop to fix it. Replaced all the thermal pads with ICD7 I got close to 20c drops in cpu temps.

What's more important than anything is proper technique in applying the compound! Surface prep, using the correct amount and securing the mounting hardware. Only when that is done correctly should one worry about the brand/type of compound they are using.

Ignoring proper mounting technique easily negates any advantage one compound has over another.

That said those thermal pads are the pits. HOWEVER sometimes one MUST use a thermal pad if the mechanical tolerances (distance between mounting surfaces) is too great, etc. In this case paste would actually perform worse!

very true :)

I am just happy with how well my laptop is cooling :)

Oh and glancing over the thread title with AS5 and crack it looks like something far worse.

I use Arctic cooling MX-2 (used to use AS5)

So far I seem to get ~2c less on idle and load temps using MX-2, and apparently MX-2 has a longer life (doesn't need to be reset for like 3-4 years) Where AS5 needs to be reset after like 1.5?

I have to admit I used AS5 for longer then 1.5years without resetting and didnt see any difference in temps though.

Most of the high performance compound is VERY close to the same in regards to cooling capacity, usually the difference is in it's physical makeup (some is more waters, some is more pasty, etc)
