I'm applying for a desktop support position that will have a tier 1 support role with AS400. I've never worked with this system before, but I've been doing some research online to see what it is all about. Experience with AS400 is not a requirement, but I would like to familiarize myself with the system a bit before I go in for the interview.

As tier 1 support for AS400 what kinds of things might I be responsible for?

Thanks for any assistance you folks can provide.

I'm guessing you're going to be dealing with people using the software that is being hosted on the AS400, ie some database driven application. I highly doubt you'll be given any sort of access to the server as level 1 support.

If you know what applications you'll be supporting, it would probably be better to get familiar with those first.

If you really want to get familiar with an AS400 better start learning AIX. I'd also figure out which release they are using because there are subtle differences between them. I'm not sure what kind of hardware support AIX has, you might be able to run it under a virtual machine... but I'm sure there are all sorts of licensing issues to deal with there.

Resetting user accounts - wrkusrprf username
enabling user accounts - same as the above command just you type enable
restarting print queues - wrkwtr *all then pop a 1 next to the printer to restart.

there are a few others but for 1st line those are probably going to be the most used for you.

You may even have to create user profiles give users access to different screens etc

Have fun
