The trick is to buy in an area full of doctors and lawyers who will FREAK OUT if you even mention messing with their school. :p

But yeah, I agree to an extent. I just don't want my kids in a situation where 90% of the other parents are uninvolved in their kids' education and mine are forced to learn at their pace.

Oh, parents at my daughter's school are very active. They organize and go to every single redistricting meeting. They didn't touch our area the past two years. My daughter will start 3rd grade in the fall.

In Duluth, Notre Dame Academy, $10K+/year. A friend sends her kid there.

If Im spending money on private school in Atlanta it's Westminster, International school, or bust.

My cousin spends close to $50k a year for his 7 and 4 yr old for private. No they're not going to one those two schools. Personally I think it's waste on money but it's his money.

There is definitely a point of diminishing returns, IMHO.

Nah, we just paid stuff off with cash. Tax refund, my (laughable) bonus, etc. All went to debt starting with the highest-interest stuff, and finishing with the car loan.

That is most excellent!!!!!!!
Congrats :)

I attack debt like crazy when it has interest, hence I don't have any debt with interest right now at 27. It took me about a year to pay off student loans, 18mos to pay off a car I bought when I was still leasing a 2nd. After I tackled that, I just have been able to cream my debt.

Bought a $30k truck and paid it off in 2 months. 8 months later bought a $24kish car and also paid it off within 2 months.

On the flip side I have very minimal savings, but the interest rates on the cars were much higher than anything I could invest in last year. So in reality it was cheaper just to knock out that debt.

Paying off debt is easy when your rich.

"Rich" is a relative term. A two-income household making $100k is living pretty large with no kids, not so much when you factor in two or more rugrats.

It is still twice the average of the typical American household.

What's your point? People across the spectrum believe and think different things will still make that average amount.
I was making a snide correlation between education levels, income, and turning left.

You can pay to send them to another public school. Otherwise, you have to send them to the one for the area you live in.

i don't think we have that option here. most here set up a fake household at an apartment to switch schools. every once in a while you'll get a kid who's fantastic at football who gets some sort of exemption.

I'm sure the engineers that work for NASCAR are more educated and make more than your household income... :whiste:

Got our student loans finally taken care of, too. Freed up a decent bit monthly, all that remains is mortgage...plus a couple of pretty modest car leases (one essentially free because it's on a Prius and the savings in gas from its predecessor virtually covers the payment). I don't really consider them debt, though, because everybody pays for a car one way or the other, whether it's purchased outright or not, it's all varying degree of how much per month you're paying (and yes, depreciation counts).
Some are good, some are crap. On top of this, there was a recent redistricting that closed some schools and moved kids around a bit. You have to really pay attention to where you buy a house around here and (unfortunately) when we bought we had no intention of ever having kids
I've heard Atlanta is ridiculous for schools, constantly changing zones and things.
Awesome

Congrats

If the whole country did this there would be no legal robber barons that call themselves banks.
Do as I say not as I do, eh, dmcowen?

My actual point is that pretty much anyone can be "rich" if they are willing to put in the time and effort to go to school and develop a career. State school here in GA is essentially free if you can maintain a 3.0 GPA (hope scholarship program), yet we are statistically one of the dumbest states in the US because your "average household" just doesn't give a shit.

Paying off debt is easy when your're smart with your money.

FTFY.

I'm not rich. Just smart with my money. I paid it off with $13k from selling my already paid off car, $7k in tax returns and a $10k bonus I had just received. I didn't take all that money I was getting and blow it on stupid stuff.

The tax return was so high because I had just gotten married earlier in the year I got that tax return for, and we hadn't adjusted everything yet.

I think my total income from that tax year was maybe $50-$60k including my wife.

Yeah it's all relative. One of the "richest" guys I know is an industrial welder who works contract to contract (read: probably only works half the year). He owns a house he bought and renovated in an "up and coming" part of town, rents the extra rooms to friends, and has driven the same POS corolla for years. He has extra money coming out of his ears because he basically has no expenses.

I expect to have money coming out of my ears in the next 8-10 years at most.

If all goes well, 3 years.

Just had my son at http://shreiner.com/ which cost us 10k for the year. On top of the 7k we spent on my daughter at the local Catholic school in Kennesaw. With all the incidental stuff at her school, girl scouts, and other activities, her load was right at 10k also. So 20k went to schools this year.

We live in Acworth, just inside of the Bartow county line and there was no fucking way we were sending our kids to the local meth labs around here. We knew this when we bought our home 17 years ago. We planned on a small mortgage, which is 600.00a month and we have 4 years left on it. All of our discretionary income goes to our kids schooling. I've seen the Roswell, Alpharetta, Milton saga play out too many times and I want no part of that. I want to be in control of my kids education

Peace
