(It's become painfully clear that many people have completely dismissed the fact that I posted this in jest. It's not a factual post in any stretch of the imagination, it wasn't intended to be. I made no mystery of that. Yet, ignorant sluts still whine about the facts and are pissed at me for absurd statistics and are spewing all sorts of vulgarity. You'd think I pissed in someone's wheaties or something. Actually, From these kinds of results - I'd say pissing in someone's wheaties would probably lose the popularity vote to this garbage)

For those of you who are prone to ignorance (like most of the indignant responses that follow this) let me just say that this is a bit of humor, the numbers are contrived. I'm sorry if you cannot handle reading, and understanding a little bit of humor. mmmmm, nah. Not really sorry. It's just sorry.

a. The number of physicians in the US is 700,000.
b. Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year is 120,000.
c. Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171.(US Dept. of Health & Human Services)

Then think about this:

a. The number of gun owners in the US is 80,000,000.
b. The number of accidental gun deaths per year (all age groups) is 1,500.
c. The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is .0000188.

Statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than
gun owners.

FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS
AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR.

Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban doctors
before this gets out of hand. As a public health measure I have withheld
the statistics on lawyers for fear that the shock could cause people to
seek medical attention.

These facilities are a menace to society.

My aim here is not to get into any sort of childish flame war, the likes of which you seem to be propogating with vigor; I merely wanted to avoid gratuitous argument and replace it with fact. For those of you that haven't been here that long, that is what used to seperate Anandtech from the likes of Fark. :)

Here is something a little more tangible:

Current US Population: 290,088,265 (source)

Death Rate for ALL age groups where cause is "Accident or Adverse Event": 35.8 / 100,000 (source)

Expected # of resultant deaths this year: 104,000 (rounding up)

Since not all accidental deaths are caused by doctors, it is safe to assume that even less are a doctor's fault. Let's use an absurdly generoud 50%.

We now have 50,000 deaths a year. And that is so high it is laughable.

Damn, mwilding beat me to it. CDC.gov has most of these statistics, and if only 100,000 death a year are from accidents / unexpected injury, I'm sure doctors aren't the ones to blame for all of them. Next time you get an email that raves about how much our helathcare sucks, and that doctors are evil, just delete it. Don't bring it here, and try to pawn it off as fact. :disgust:

I feel tainted after reading this thread. I am soon to start medical school and hope I am the person Sketcher depends on to save his life some day and then he can mouth these statistics to me and then I will still help him to the best of my ability b/c it is my job to help people no matter how insanely stupid they are :)
