I think I recall watching Bill Maher's Real Time show last Friday night and he had the cyber security expert James Lyne as a guest speaker who talked about this and he said they don' t think that this is the all being done by the Chinese that they think it may be someone else but apparently they have been trying to track them down and they are routing everything through the Chinese to make it appear it is them. I don't doubt that there are chinese hackers and some hacking is coming from them, but I think he was specifically talking about the recent development of that Chinese Military building that they tracked some of the hacking to.

Anyway I was trying to look up some information on James Lyne came up with these links:

I don't doubt there are attacks coming from other than China but the fact remains most all the attacks are coming from a single location.

The details we have analyzed during hundreds of investigations convince us that the groups conducting these activities are based primarily in China and that the Chinese Government is aware of them.

What's amazing is how clearly the location of the attackers can be pinpointed to a building of the People's Liberation Army.

What should be done is sneak in then remotely set off a small EMP bomb in that building frying every electrical device in it.

Or send a stealth drone with a self destruct mechnisim drop a EMP bomb on the building then blow itself up in to untraceable bits, better yet put Iranian or North Korean tech and markings in it so they get the blame.

China has constant computer attacks / probes to pretty much every US organization. If you're on the net, chances are that you're getting scanned on a regular basis. If you make the top 500 corporation list, chances are that you'll be the target of spear phishing attacks.

I've seen it first hand on the firewall logs.

Regarding motivation, China wants all of the knowledge that the US has spent so much time building up.

If you look at all of the companies that they've hacked, all of the plans for electronics that have been transmitted to them from US manufacturers using their companies to build things, etc., then they're amassed more technical knowledge than any other country, except maybe the US (depending on much the US snoops on internet traffic).

The US is too dependent on China right now for it's own good, and it's the corporations that have sold us out for a bonus in their quarterly profits. The politicians let it happen and now the middle class is fooked beyond belief. Things like pension, free health care, benefits, etc. that were once the staple of a good job in the US are evaporating before our very eyes.

When the current 30-40 something (the generation after the baby boomers) retires, they will have hell to pay, because all of the safety nets put up over the past half century will be gone by then. The US isn't growing any more like it had been from the 19th to 20th centuries and we are all in for some sticker shock over the next few decades. If you plan on having kids, it's a good idea to teach them Chinese, because at the current rate they will be the major superpower of the 21st century.
