As far as the world is concerned, where does the US rank in health care?

The wealtiest people in the world travel here for surgery.
We are the undisputed leader in medical care world wide.

Are you talking about quality of healthcare, or number of people having healthcare, cost of healthcare? Be a little more specific.

Yeah, you need to be much more specifics. And even if you're talking about say .. only quality .. there are still many aspects to discuss. As in .. there are 44 million uninsured Americans .. and the quality of their care is nearly non existant .. however, if you happen to have good coverage, or a substantial trust fund .. then you have the best health care in the world. We are the most medically advanced nation in that we can provided the most advanced procedures ... .... provided one can pay for it.

Hmmm...
The WHO study used five performance measures: life expectancy (U.S. ranks 24th); child survival rates; health care responsiveness; minority health care; and health care financing.

Well, since we don't have a national health care financing system, I would expect the U.S. ranking took a major hit right there. On the other hand, people with money come here from all over the world for the best healthcare money can buy.

I don't think the article is wrong. For example, Cuba has a prenatal care system that puts the US's to shame. Not hard to do considering the country basically doesn't have one.

America's health care system is second only to Japan ... Canada, Sweden, Great Britain ... well, all of Europe. But you can thank your lucky stars we don't live in Paraguay! - Homer Simpson

Interesting you should mention Japan. Japan spends about 1/2 of what the US per capita on healthcare and comes out ahead. What does that say about the current US system?

I'm sure we rank very high in regards to research and development. However it can be very expensive to get health care for your average person.

I'd imagine the US would have superior healthcare(level of skills/techonology/etc) but due to the cost and amount of people that can't afford such things it's ranked lower.

What it says is that healthcare costs are much higher than they should because of how easy our system makes it to sue doctors for things outside their control and win millions of dollars in punitive damages.

It says we spend the money to do research and development, invent new drugs, and techniques, and they reap the rewards of that painstaking research.

Much lower than where we should be.
we have good training, and some great doctors, but the health care system itself ranks low, Cuba has a far better heath care system. If you aren't rich or can afford $600 a month insurance (per person) you pretty much get booted out the door when it comes to quality health care.

I think the quality of healthcare in the US is the best. The problem here is price, not quality.

And even access is not nearly as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Ability to pay or the lack thereof does NOT deny anyone life saving procedures or most preventitive procedures.

And contrary to other countries with socialized health care, I can get an immediate appointment at any primary care or specialist.

there was a thread about that in P&N

there are plenty of countries with socialized health care AND non existant waiting lists

Sweden!

you know, one of my friends told me a story about Sweden's health care system, I can't verify it, i'll look and see if i can find an article or something, but I dont have a reason not to believe him, he's usually pretty knowedgeable about things like this, anyway...

so this lady had a miscarriage, and she was sad and went home, and then the hospital was going to ship her the fetus, so they could have a funeral or whatever. So two weeks later the lady gets a beaten up cardboard box with the decaying body of her dead child inside. When asked why they didnt take better care of it, and do something like send it in one of those cooler things so it wouldn't rot, they said it would have been too expensive...

now if thats better health care than we have i feel extremely fvcked
