i wonder if sony is making money at $200? with the latest revision they've got the chips into one unit IIRC, so they were making money at $300.

nintendo can move down to $150 without losing much if anything.
 
i told myself I'd never buy a new console system, but $200 for an X-box sounds awfully tempting...

I'll say it once - companies do not make money on consoles. It's the accessories and games where they make profit. It's practically impossible to make a profit on a console

got mine awhile back

paid about 150 for the ps2 and 300 for the xbox
each had some games

so I am still happy with the purchase

Boo.. I got it as a gift, but they paid $299 + shipping/tax for it. At least I've had it for 7 months... Boo anyway.
 
The Xbox costs $229 to manufacture and distribute. Remember MS's goal is to hit a $99 price point ASAP, as that is the point where the most consoles are sold. I am willing to bet MS is hyper aggressive and gets it to $99 for Christmas with less than a $50 loss per unit.

Also this price drop has been planned since March. I recall Sony PR just last week saying they were lowering the price till fall, and what do you know they lower it. MS is going to be extremely agressive, they arent going to go away...
 
Seven months ago the price of the Xbox was hovering around $320, its dropped in price, and if MS wins vs Nvidia, it will only get cheaper...

Wow, I haven't had a console since an old SNES. The $199 price tag is tempting... Anyone know how well the XBox does as a DVD player? I know you have to buy the extra kit, but is the quality the same/better than the PS2 DVD output?

Oh, there an auction on Ebay for a brand new XBox system... it's at $232.50 with 5 minutes to go. 🙂
 
LH, where'd you read or hear that it costs just $229 to manufacture XBox? I don't doubt this figure actually, I'm just wondering...

By the way, irreguardless of what XBox's manufacturing cost is, MS has to pay retailers some money to sell XBox at their stores. That's more money MS loses on each XBox. Just in case some of you guys already didn't know. 🙂

Surprisingly, the dvd playback is EXCELLENT. IMHO it is way better the the ps2 dvd player and superior to some of the cheapo standard dvd models
 
Smolek: Cool... tempting... Though, I was hoping I could sit my LCD on top of it and from the looks of the pictures, it's not totally flat... Hm... decisions, decisions...
