As an Athlon64 owner, I owe it to the computing world to overclock the s%$# out of my system

I've often toyed with the idea of overclocking my computer, but I've never done it, at least beyond what a slightly bigger heatsink and CPU fan can accomidate. But ever since I got my x64 system up and running I've been wanting to give it another go, so to speak. Unfortunately, I don't really know where to start. I'm not keen on buying some generic (albeit rather powerful in appearance) cooling system from Fry's or whatnot without knowing some stuff first.

So, all you OCers out there, what would you recommend for someone looking to OC his system a considerable amount (CPU and GPU, ideally) without breaking the bank?

Wow, definitely affordable. How much of a difference does this make? And by that I mean how many extra MHz can y'all who are using it get out of your CPUs?

What is there in the way of GPU stuff? I have an X800 Pro if it matters.

Can you put some specs in?

most importantly
processor (not just speed) but type (i.e., venice, newcastle, etc.)
powersupply
graphics card (ok, we got eh x800 pro)
memory.

Not sure on the processor type, I've never checked. I probably should, but I can't right now. Anyway:

3000+ at 2.009GHz
Antec 550W PSU (it had some name I quickly forgot. It's gold-colored)
X800 Pro AGP 256mb
1 Gig PC3200 RAM, forgot the manufacturer name

Yeah, what kind of guy doesn't know the complete specs of his rig, right? Someone with ADD, that's who. :p

dl cpu-z

you could probably hit 2.4ghz easily without trying. and then 2.5 is still attainable. 2.6-2.7 you gotta know what you are doing. have fun

I agree, if you can't hit 2.4, you have really bad luck or don't know what your doing. 2.6-2.7 is attainable if your lucky, it's all luck if you ask me, skill involved but luck of the draw... like poker.

CPU-z says I have a NewCastle processor. Interestingly enough it also says I only have PC2700 RAM. Stupid ADD.

My Winchester 3200+ (2GHz) OC's to 2.5GHz on stock cooling and at stock voltage (1.4V). Im planning on getting a Thermalright XP-90 (with a 92mm panaflo) so that i can up the voltage a little.

I havent used it yet, but i think the Thermalright is probably the best option. Otherwise, you can also look at some Zalman alternatives. They're also great coolers.

I too would reccommend an XP90...My Winchester 3200+ is currently at 2600MHZ and does 2700MHZ. Currently at 1.55v effective.

You might be able to get 2.6ghz out of it, 2.4 Ghz is about as far as the Newcastle core went.
