Only with the help of Sylvan learning center. *Begin terrible commercial about stupid kids saying how cool reading is*

You need to start reading more. It's like exercise.

I've read 4.5 books so far this year, and my speed and understanding seem to be increasing as a result.

What kind of books do you read? History texts, sci fi, etc? What kind?

As an adult, is reading comprehension improvable, or not?

Actually, the "or not" is superfluous/implied...should remove it.

So far in 2004...

-Three Roads to Quantum Gravity
-A History of Pi
-Just Six Numbers
-Superstrings and the Search for the Theory of Everything

I'm about 70% through...

The Fabric of the Cosmos

Good lord, do you understand everything you read? I'm interested in all of that but I don't think I even could begin to understand what the author is talking about.

Yes, like Chaotic42 says, by reading more. Not necessarily books on string theory though :)

I'd suggest a mix of books to expose yourself to different ideas, styles and vocabularies. Get a good "collegiate" dictionary (my old American Heritage is still good) and keep it handy while you're reading.

- a biography or two
- a collection of essays
- short stories
- a murder mystery in a modern setting
- a few of the more literate SF and fantasy authors like C J Cherryh, L E Modesitt Jr., Dan Simmons (among others).

You might find you like genres you've never tried before, like biographies or short stories. Many of the critically acclaimed modern writers are as pretentious and overrated as modern art or haute cusine, but there are some good books in every genre.

Did your parents ever encourage you to read? Did you ever have books lying around the house when you were young? Did you ever have any incentive to read as a hobby?
