He died today, but for the last 30 years, he wrote On Language in the Sunday NYT magazine.

Our politics differed majorly, but I shared his fierce and knowing love of our English language.

I too differed in politics and also differed with Safire on his passions about the English language, but still the world lost a good and decent man today. Rest in peace William Safire, a pundit's pundit.

Fierce love? Is that like gentle hate?

No.

Thanks for clarifying.

Since I'm not a lexicographic irregular it went over my head.

Maybe its worth noting, that this thread has gone on for a whole five posts without a single poster stating glee over the death of William Safire or predicting eternal damnation in the fires of hell. It may be a new Anand tech world's record, and may I say, somewhat a tribute to William Safire. Even those who disagreed with him still liked and respected him. And I think its fair to say he died with his boots on, doing what he loved. I will say it again, RIP and you will be missed.
