Trying to decide on a Winter vacation spot. Has anyone been to both places?

Deciding between either Palm Beach, Aruba or Anse Marcel in St. Martin (Northwest coast of the French side of St. Martin).

I've been to both. Both are really excellent vacation spots. Best in the Caribbean It's a touch choice. Both islands are pretty much the same. Aruba is more desert though. There's good shopping there and a few good restaurants. There's one on a pier by the (now infamous) Holiday Inn. Great seafood. Don't know if it's still there.

St. Martin is a mix of French and Dutch. It has a lot more greenery. More places to explore. Didn't get a chance to do any shopping or dining though. Orient Beach is a must visit.

Been to both, but Aruba was a long time ago and don't remember much. St. Martin was awesome, we stayed on the French side(Orient beach).

i've been to both but to only one beach on each island. i prefer orient beach in st. martin. they also have good shopping there.

i don't think you could go wrong either way though.

EDIT: please note the shopping is not on orient beach but elsewhere on the island just in case i confused anyone.

That's what is selling me on St. Martin. The hotel we would stay at there is: http://www.radissonblu.com/resort-stmartin

Which looks a lot better as far as sceneary is concerned over what I've seen in Aruba. Aruba looks like a lot of high rises next to each other on the beach...as much as I don't mind that, the St. Martin is selling me with the trees, isolated-type-look etc..

I haven't been to St. Martin, but what is it you're primarily interested in? Scenery, nightlife, shopping, etc.? Aruba is populated, and so you'll get the benefit of nightlife/shopping, but I would recommend Bonaire 100x more than Aruba if you're looking to just relax on a beach/scuba/snorkel/take in the scenery. On a clear day, you can see Aruba as they're only about 15 miles apart, but the difference between the islands is night and day.

Aruba is beautiful but not a lot of scenic to it for the tourist...as mmntech said, a lot of desert. Beaches, snorkling, the underwater antilla sunken wwII ship.

Personally I'd go to St. Martin (altho haven't been so that's part. ;) )

Goin with the woman...so don't necessarily need crazy nightlife (I'll save that for the trip to Bali with my buddies). Looking for more getting away from the harsh east coast cold and just relaxing, taking in a nice view, good food and some tropical drinks.

I do like both.
Aruba is south of the "hurricane belt".

St Maarten is one of my favorite places to visit between December and April, however.

Do both! :)

Been to both twice, though only once each as an adult.

In Aruba we stayed at the large Renaissance resort downtown. Good proximity to shops and restaurants. Beach is on a private island they will ferry you to. Poor snorkeling and swimming at this place. The beaches where you are looking along the west side resorts are nice, more of your standard beach setup. As far as island attractions go, much of the island is desert, but there are still a few cool things to check out... natural (collapsed) bridge, natural pool... I think doing a four wheeler tour along the north coast would be fun, we just did it in a rental :p

aruba diving was much better than sxm, antilla wreck was cool (can see from satellite).

in sxm we stayed in a house near orient beach (french side, north eastish). i love that beach! not as many attractions on sxm imo. the beach by the airport is a must see, but really not as much going on here. also, we went in DEAD season (sept) so many places were closed, even along orient beach. diving is not great on sxm, but i think it is growing (really need to head over to saba which is close but offshore if you want that). dont know much about the area you described, we didnt check it out. if you are into seaglass walk along the beach in grand case (closest town to where you are staying)

i would say aruba is a little less ghetto/carribbean. having spent a lot of time down there it doesn't really bother me but some people may care. aruba is probably the 'nicest' island aside from the caymans IMO and it definitely feels more built up than saint martin.

both have nightlife if you are looking for that. casinos. booze. etc. honestly both are great. it really depends what you are looking for but i dont think you will be disappointed with either choice.

I think Aruba's beaches are nicer. And St. Martin can get pretty pricey. There are far better places to go in the carribean for a lot less money.
