Artificing in Quake 4

getting random artificing in quake 4...usually happens right after an autosave...still happens when i'm running my X1600 at stock. i don;t think its heat, i've never had a heat issue with this thing, and the fan isn't on high when it starts, usually. The drivers for this thing suck (i have to get them from Acer near as i can tell) and they have yet to release an updated set of drivers so it could be an OpenGL conflict...any thoughts?
