Artifacts-information please

I'm still kind of a newbie when it comes to graphics, but that's what I came here for-to learn.
Anyway, could you tell me more about artifacts, do they appear when graphics cards are overloaded/OC'd? Is the card in need of downclocking if too many artifacts appear?

Artifacting is where you get pieces if garbled graphics all flashing in different spots across the screen. It's usually caused by too high of a memory overclock whereas usually the game'll crash completely with too much of a core overclock.

Yes, if any of the 2 above-mentioned events occur lower your memory or core by 5Mhz until the artifacting disappears and/or until games no longer crash.
