Artifacts in BF2142?

Well, I'm not really sure if they're artifacts or not due to the way they appear/behave.

On any map, with any graphics settings, I'm getting strange flickering black boxes appearing ONLY in the sky and ONLY when I move around. If I stand still, nothing happens. They don't appear on any textures other than in the sky.

I doubt these are heat/gpu artifacts because they only appear in the sky, and because I'm running my 8800GTX at stock for 24/7 usage and temps stay around 85C. Besides, artifacts due to heat/damage would appear in every other game I played and they would appear all over the screen, right? I don't have this problem in other games.

Here's a video, just look at the sky and sun but also notice how they go away when I stop moving:

Artifacts?

I know BF series is sensitive to overclocks of CPU. When I had my 3000+ overclocked I would get artifacts in-game. Now that I have my e6300 stock clocked for the time being, I get no artifacts. If ur CPU is overclocked, try toning it down.

I hace basically the same card, and I don't see anything like that. I'll play for a while to make sure.

Well there must be a reason then.

I tried putting my cpu back to stock and loosening ram timings, but just like I thought, that didn't fix anything.

I also tried BF2 (which uses a very similar if not identical engine) and don't get any problems.

Then it's the game settings. Try lowering the AA and AF. I had this problem in BF2 and the AA was bogging the engine down... Edit: Have you tried lowering the video card's RAM speed's? That looks more like memory artifacting than engine error after a second look.

I've tried running the card at 300/500 instead of the stock 576/900. The artifacts still occur after such a drastic reduction in clock speeds. It isn't related to my vid card speed.

I'll try it without AA/AF, but I'm pretty sure I've tried that already. I don't remember, so it can't hurt!

The next thing I'm trying is a reinstall.

Have you been by the official 2142 forum? You can't be the only one experiencing this.

Yeah, I've been there, and yeah, it looks like I'm alone. Maybe there is something wrong...

I mean, my X1900XTX doesn't do it and my friend's 7800GTX doesn't do it.

i have a friend with a 8800gts -had same problem, also saw this on bf2142 boards- use driver cleaner to remove all traces of older drivers-then reinstall fresh drivers
hope this works

Did that with five different driver sets and it didn't fix the problems.

I uninstalled the current driver, rebooted, ran Driver Cleaner, then installed the new driver.

That's how I've done it for years, isn't that the right way to do it?

Yup. That's the right way to do it assuming you boot back into safe mode and run Driver Cleaner.

I get artifacting in BF2. Not quite what you have. Whenever I'm inside a building there are artifacts all over the walls and floor.
