Artifacts/9800 Pro/Doom3/catalyst 4.9

Are there any settings I can adjust to reduce the amount of artifacts I get in Doom 3 in this combination??? I am running it at 1024x768 and I get 44 on the timedemo but it doesn't matter since I get a lot of artifacts.

Thanks

Y

did the artifacts happen right when you start the game or after hours of gaming?
does it just happen in d3?
have you tried other games?

Well I will have to play some other games. Doom 3 is virtually the only game I have played since I have built this box. I will load UT2004 and see how that does.

OK I just played UT 2004 a little while and the graphics are rock solid.

I have Doom 3 set to medium at 1024x768 but there are still a *lot* of artifacts.

Tuning??? parameters

Thanks

I am playing Doom 3 on my overclocked BBA 9800 Pro. I play at 1024x768 at high IQ settings with AA and AF at Application Controlled in the ATI control panel. My card is currently running at 399/360.

My card is not stock though. I installed an Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer v3 with some Arctic Silver 5 on it.

Oh yeah, I using CAT 4.8 and DX9.0c.

Maybe your supplier overclocked your graphic card before he sell it to you... better double check...

Describe the artifacts. I was getting artifacts in the character faces; they seemed to be related to the specular effects. Reducing my core overclock by 10mhz solved the problem.

It seems that Doom 3 is causing issues for many people, even with their cards at stock speeds. Mild underclocking seems to resolve the issues. I think ATi and possibly nVidia need to take more care when speed binning their chips.

Is there a recommended tool to check for overclock settings???

As far the artifacts go when you pan from side to side there are definite breakups in the picture. Like lines of the picture are not staying together.

Ideas???

Thanks for the input so far.

I have tried the 4.8 Catalyst and now the beta Catalyst 4.9 with no difference as far as this is concerned. I was hoping for better frame rates with the beta drivers but I have seen virtually no change.

Like I said UT2004 is rock solid.

OK those aren't overclocking artifacts, driver issues, or any other kind of issue caused by faulty hardware or software. It appears as though your problem is that you don't have vsync enabled. Go into the OpenGL driver options, make sure vsync is always on, and set all of your texture sliders to "quality". AA/AF should be set to "application preference". Then go into the OpenGL compatability options and enable triple buffering. You should be able to achieve quite reasonable performance using these settings in high quality mode in Doom 3, at 1024x768, and even 1280x1024. If you run the timedemo you will see that the 4.9 driver gives you a 5-10% performance boost.

OK Sickbeast u were *right on*. The vsync was set to off. As soon as I changed that. A world of difference. I could not find the AA/AF settings and the triple buffer. but I can even run it on high now with playable 32 in the timedemo. My timedemo is slower now than before evn with the Beta 4.9 of the Catalyst but it looks awesome and that is what counts.

That's odd... I've NEVER experienced tearing that bad with vsync off. Most of the time I never notice it unless I specifically look for it.

In Doom 3 it's particularly noticeable for some reason.

Not to me...

Does your problem look anything like in this article?

A problem with ATI's drivers in DOOM 3? at Techreport

"RECENTLY, WE RECEIVED a tip, some information claiming ATI's drivers exhibited some odd behavior in DOOM 3 and that the company might be compromising image quality for performance. What's more, this problem seemed to be specific to DOOM 3, raising the possibility that ATI was guilty of engaging in an application-specific optimization?a practice the firm has forsworn."
