Article: Fake Intel Boxed Processors

(They're referring to tray/OEM Intel CPUs being sold in fake retail packaging for a higher price.)

Take a gander here. I found it vaguely amusing for some reason. Hey wait, I don't remember my Intel cardboard box having any sort of distinct smell to it :Q! What is it supposed to smell like, I wonder?

It'll be sort of difficult to find out which one is a "fake" by the "scent. Considering that I have no clue what my E3110 package is suppose to smell like, lol.

Well, I grabed the box on which the E3110 came in and there is no "scent" that sticks out. I must have gotten the "unscented" box, lol.

Well the picture they showed was of the packaging for the older 65nm CPUs (with the grayish-blue box), so maybe the new bright blue box lack a smell. I have my E6600 box stashed in my closet somewhere, so it probably smells like mothballs and shoe leather by now.

Other than paying more than we're supposed to and just the sheer injustice of it, most of us here won't mind because we overclock. No warranties for us.

But thanks for the heads up. I usually buy boxed processors for friends' computers and I'll have to keep and eye on them.

I'm going to retrain my dog to sniff out fake retail boxes. Have the worlds first OEM sniffing dog.

Yeah I can't really imagine any reputable B&M or eTailer doing it knowingly, but I wouldn't put it past people on eBay or those smaller fly-by-night eTailers...

thats not the difficult part.

honestly how many intel cpu's have ever failed you in your lifetime?

i can only count 4 out of 50+ i probably bought in my lifetime. 2 died because i intentionally killed it. 2 died of natural deaths.

Even ask mark, he's depserately trying to kill his Celeron, which isnt quitting on him. LOL. Next week i even try to kill a cheapo E2200. :T

Your paying for insurence which is bogus but with a less then 1% margin you'll ever have to claim it.

Sounds to me like a type of hedge. If it dies, im sure they the OEM will honor the warrenty.


Basically, if a OEM buys 1000 chips and sells it 13 dollars more.

Thats 13000 dollars he made extra. Now if 1% of those die, thats 10 he needs to replace @ his wholesale price.

unless those are 10 QX chips, he still came out ahead. You guys get the hedge?

Well, usually OEM QX are $100 difference, but when you buy them from newegg, they don't have an OEM warranty. Newegg has, what, a 30-day policy?

Anyways, I checked my old boxes. No fakes. but I used to run my E6400 @ ridiculous 24/7 voltages (1.5-1.58 set in BIOS). It's still alive and I ran it for 6 months like that. It's still running. Conroes are pretty resilient.

Freaky. I have seen some incredible pirated stuff out there, some that even fooled me. I have an OEM Pack of Windows XP Pro that looks absolutely flawless, but the key won't pass, call Microsoft, they say it's pirate. The holographing, watermarking, everything looks flawless beyond belief.

Skimming through the article, looks like the best bets are the lack of a plastic strip under the pull tab, the separate hologram sticker and (once package has been opened) the plastic interior packaging being actually easy to open.

That I've personally owned? Let's see... got an OEM P4 from Fry's Electronics that was DOA. Had a 486SX25 that I intentionally overclocked until dead. That's about it. I've seen others though, that weren't owned by me. Yeah, basically CPUs (especially current ones) are pretty darn difficult to kill off.

T-Birds seemed to crack for many, and plain fry themselves at inopportune times.

The hottest thing I've ever owned was a T-Bird 1400 Good lord it put out an insane amount of heat.

Yep and that Swiftech 462-A was of such great help. Much more trusted then the Hedgehog prickly copper slab that clipped to the socket tabs. :Q Tbird o/c from 1400 to 1600 seemed like robbing Fort Knox back then and now our Northbridge's are faster. :laugh:

I havent seen those sinks in such a rediculous long time.

And yeah the T-bird was stupidly hot. Unlucky for me my h2oing started right after the T-bird.
