I'm still running AS1 over here...has anyone noticed a real difference between this stuff? Am I due for a paste upgrade?

I use AS5 and it is great. I really didn't notice any difference in temps, but doesn't bleed or run. I have never had to reapply it compared to older ones.

There might be a 1 degree Celcius difference. Some overclockers are willing to pay quite a bit for that 1 degree though...

I used AS5 this time around and have been very happy with the temps.

P4 3.0C @3.6 @ stock voltage, idling @ 34C, loading out at 47C.

My plastic spoon smoothing technique works perfectly with AS5. I put on a super thin layer, and achieved super nice temps.

I love my TT Spark 7.

I'd say to buy AS5 when you run out of what you've got now. The few-degree differences that the various improvements make...well, they are only a few degrees.

Buying AS over the generic white goop is like buying Castrol synthetic motor oil instead of the cheap gas station motor oil. If you're an auto enthusiast and want the best performance and protection for your baby you'll buy the Castrol synthetic motor oil and smile when you do so. If you're a computer hardware enthusiast then you'll buy the AS and do so with a smile knowing you just bought and used the best on your baby.

There is very little difference between the two.

I think he was questioning the difference between AS1, AS5, Ceramique, OCZ Silver, etc. Not the difference between generic paste and top of the line paste. That is more like questioning the difference between Mobil 1, Castrol synthetic, and Penzoil synthetic.

bah, it's cheap enough that I usually buy a tube when the new stuff comes out and bundle a half-tube with some hardware sale. I don't think it makes much difference in performance at all in actual performance.

Remember that the older OCZ Ultra 2 was recalled so don't buy that stuff if you still see it available. The new OCZ Ultra 5 is rebadged Arctic Silver 5.

AS5 is nice and easy to spread. I've never used Ceramique though. As for the other off-brands, I'd stick with the Arctic Silver stuff as it's only a couple bucks more if it is more expensive than the other stuff.

Your AS1 should is still decent though. No need to change unless you want the absolute lowest temps or run out.
