I've read all sorts of stuff about the application of Artic Silver 5.

I'm still a bit leary about How to apply Artic Silver 5 & How much to apply.

Is what would really help, is an Application Demonstration with Pictures.

Anyplace to see Application Pictures ???

Thanks

Apply a tiny, tiny "dab", as small as you can to the center of the processor. Do not rub it around with your finger but let it spread itself out as your cpu heats up and cools down over the next few weeks. By then, you should have a perfect, thin layer all the way around the cpu and you should be problem free. Its actually best to put too little if you aren't sure because too much usually ends in disaster. Thats not official, but its basically a paraphrase...

The arctic silver website shows 2 methods. Good luck.
Thanks. I don't remember the AS-5 Website being all-that helpful, but I'll go check again

Thanks. By Tiny, tiny do you mean like " the size of a BB" "Half the size of a BB" ??? & so just put the AS-5 in the center of the CPU, don't spread it around, install the HS/F and allow the AS-5 to spread itself, Correct ???

Thanks

Thanks. On the AS-5 site it says 0ne-Quarter the size of a BB. That answers 'How Much'. Thanks

But I'm not sure about the "Don't spread it around the CPU before installing the HS/F"

At the AS-5 site it shows them spreading the compound 'Before' installing the HS/F. Which makes sense because that way you'd be getting a Uniform application encompassing the entire CPU. But when i put AS-5 on my Northbridge, it was difficult to get a Uniform layer because the AS-5 was so thick.

What particular tool do you use to spread AS-5 on a CPU ???

Thanks for your help.

No, they don't show them spreading the AS5 around. It says in big red letters: "For Arctic Silver 1, 2 and 3:" for sections 4,5,and 6.

For section 7, it says "For ALL arctic Silver versions:".

They want you to smear the other versions on the HSF, then compeletly wipe it off. This will put it in the cracks and crevices- in preparation for the actual application- which starts in section 7. They DON'T want you to do that with AS5- only go straight to section 7.

I suggest everyone actually READ the instructions and follow them for best results. Sure, it'll work if you smear it or whatever- but not as well as it COULD work. Just read and follow the instructions..

One of you reminded me that I've gotten sloppy. I used to polish the surfaces -- processor cap and heatsink base -- with AS5 before applying the "grain of rice."

I've been forgetting this polishing preparation lately.

I use an expired credit card to spread AS5. I trimmed half a credit card into a shape that looks like a wide spackling or putty-knife. The "handle" is just long enough to have a little spring to the feel of it. This "tool" has a 2-inch handle and a 2-inch-wide blade-edge.

I put the "rice-grain" of AS5 on the center of the processor cap, and begin smearing little portions of it toward the edges. I try to leave the ever-so-tiniest mound of the stuff at the center of the processor cap. With the heatsink, I just try to make a uniform application of the past, but it helps if you start in the middle of the heatsink base where it will meet the center of the processor cap.

True. I must of overlooked section 7. It says to use a Razor Blade or Credit Card.

Thanks for your help.

hmmm i put what sounds like way too much on and smeared it around and it seems to be fine... why would this end in catastrophe?
