Go to the arcticsilver.com site and look at the instructions. It's rather detailed.

You DO NOT MIX arctic silver, Zalman thermal paste and/or the AMD thermal pad on the original HSF.

Not true at all.

The point of thermal grease is to fill in the microscopic ridges on the CPU/Processor surfaces. If you apply too little grease, you don't fill in all the holes and you've got trapped air bubbles; this causes bad thermal transfer.

On the other hand, if you smear it all over the CPU like your friend said, you have way too much grease and transfer is as bad/worse than if you don't use enough. A small dab, just a drop or so really, is perfect. If you seat your heatsink and see a ton of grease squishing out all over the sides, you've done something wrong :)

Just re-applied my Arctic Silver 5 following the destructions using a dot the size of a BB on the CPU cap. I am getting 28 degrees at idle and 32 degrees running Prime 95 after an hour. Running Athlon 64 3000+ Venice with a XP-120 heatsink.

Thought I was reading AS's instructions wrong the first time, thinking a little dot didn't seem like enough, so I smeared the top of the CPU cap with an thin, even layer and was getting temps of 37 at idle and 42 under load. Learned my lesson.
