Artic Silver 5 longevity

I'm putting together a rig for my brother, and I don't ever want to have to mess with it again. I was planning on using AS5 on a Barton 2500+ (@ stock speeds probably), but heard that over time you have to replace it.

Should I just use this cheap stuff if I don't ever want to have to replace it? Thanks!

I can't think of why you would need to replace it. I've used AS5 on all my heatsinks for the past 2 1/2 years. It has always stayed in place and given me good thermal performance. It does not dry out.

There is no reason you should have to "replace" the AS5.

That's what I thought. I've seen some people say it "dries out" over time, and I was like ??????

I'm thinking at stock speeds this should last forever, my 2.5ghz A64 on the other hand

I have Arctic Silver III my cpus for a couple of years now running 24 hours a day with the Folding@home program with nary a gitch.

AS doesn't dry out. Standard white silicon heatsink compound does.
