Artic Cooling VGA Silencer with 6800 GT??

I recently purchased a Gainward 6800 GT Golden Sample to replace my 9800 Pro. I love the performance of the new card, but I'm finding it a little too loud, even with the dynamic fan adjustment.

I'd like to replace the heatsink with something quieter. I was considering a liquid cooling option, like the Zalman Reserator, but the Artic Cooling NV silencer would be a much cheaper option if it works well.

Has anyone tried this heatsink on a 6800 GT? Will it cool as well as the stock Gainward fans?

Here is a link to the Artic Cooling NV silencer.

Artic Cooling NV Silencer for 6800

Thanks.

i have one and am returning it. for the price it just isn't worth it. it was very quiet (silent, actually, i could never hear it over my intake and exhuast fans, which are panaflos!). however, it didn't cool as well as the stock solution on my pny 6800gt AND didn't exhuast hot air out the back of the case as adverstized - basically it just pushes the air around in the case like every other vga cooler.

One of my major concerns is the noise of the Gainward card. Even if I get equal cooling with the NV Silencer, the drop in noise would be well worth it.

From the reviews I've seen on the net, it cools a little better than the stock 6800 GT card, but I haven't seen any direct comparisons to the Gainward card.

I can't see ANY way that the VGA Silencer cools better than the Gainward hovercraft-thing.

this nv silencer doesn't work on gainward 6800 cards cause the gainward cards, golden sample or not, both comes with the back plates which cover 2 slots therefore the 2nd slot would block the exhaust path of the hot air.

Is it possible to mod the back plate (cut a whole in it) to allow the air to vent out?

The Silencer works fine for me. My temps are 55 idle and 67 full load. Additionally, the silencer probably wont fit on the Gainward cards.

yes, if you are good at modding, it should be no problem to use the nv silencer once you make a hole on the lower section of the plate cover. Another option which might be easier is to just cut off the 2nd half of the back plate instead of cutting a hole in it. The nv silencer comes with a back plate with holes you could use once you cut the 2nd half off.
