I have to RMA my GTX and ive used this gunk to stick tweakmonster ram sinks to the video memory. This card is pretty much shagged and i need a way to remove it otherwise my warrenty is void! Ive heard freezing does this trick, is this correct?

Advice would be highly appriciated.

(Puts on Captain Obvious hat) :D Well you know...You did kind of void the warrenty when you bonded them bad boys on. I'm going to do that to a mobo, so you are not being mocked.

If the freezer trick works, let us know. You have nothing to lose and maybe, just maybe, a sucsessful RMA. But as Dick Nixon once said,"We can do it,but it would be wrong."He got caught..

If the freezer trick work you will still have traces of it near the chip edges, that will be a tattle-tale,so that has to be removed. Sounds like alot of work.

I tried mixing a little(30%) AS3 w/AS Alumina epoxy to make removal easyer. It sure did as 23 hours later a lite nudge would dislodge the mosfet sinks i put on.

I will Google it later just for you(and me).

I believe this would help tremendously. Granted, it's $6, but it would save you how much on your card? I've used it (on ceramique, not thermal adhesive), but it did a wonderful job. Just be careful not too put too much, because it will run once it liquifies. Have paper towels handy, and set them up so that they are surrounding the chip that you are working on.

Ah ha i have 2 bottles of this stuff. However it only removes paste i dont think it will work on the adhesive (which acts like superglue) but i will give it a try.

As for the freezing yankee i will keep you posted on the progress but it may be a few days untill i recive a new card before i can give you feedback.

Thanks for your comments.

Tas, we are talking about a two part epoxy here. The only thing i know of that will even touch it once it has hardened is acetone= the most aggesive solvent imaginable around PCBs.
To be used with the most exteam care and not by the inexperianced. I have a 1/2 gallon here and rarely use it for anything. Acetone at it's best will clear a discoloring on the chip face but not remove a speck that's on the surface. He may want to play with acetone on his dead VGA as he really has nothing more to loose. The sinks can be sanded or filed flat to be used again and that's the best he will probably get. Reusable heat sinks.

Well the freezer trick did not work and i ended up pulling one of the memory chips of the card lol! There was no way that stuff would move its set like cement and i would not recomend using it on something as expesnive as my video card if its still under warrenty. So bare this in mind when you mod your motherboard.

Btw i would not have modded my card unless the lousy stock fan had not started to make ****** loads of noise. To save the inconvinience of sending the card for rma i had a spare VF700 an bought some ram sinks to solve the problem myself. Card worked fine for 3 months untill now. Now ive lost the warrenty on a £370 card!

Bring on that R520....

I did do some research on this and came up with nothing but pics of mosfets stuck to the bottom of sinks. According to the info at Artic's site, ASTA will crystalize at 0 degrees C, but this is a sink and just touching it will warm it up quick=no working time.
Thought, dry ice=minus 78.5C and goes from solid to a gas(sublimation) and if i ever have to cross this bridge, a small piece of dry ice will be held in gloved hand while the sink is snapped off. Hopefully leaving the chip inplace.

Thanks for coming back with your result.

I called up eVGA and asked them, will me using a VF700 void my warranty...they said no. They just changed that. So long as I reinstall the stock cooler before I RAM it (should I ever have to RMA) I'll be fine.

Some companies are actually targeting the enthusiast market in both product AND warranty? Holy crap!
