Art Shell Fired - Maybe

Just announced on NFL Network

Raiders say the story is bunk. The NFL Network is standing by its reporter.

(CBS 5) OAKLAND The Oakland Raiders late Thursday denied an NFL Network report that said the team plans to fire coach Art Shell after the current season concludes.

Not only did the franchise deny the story, they issued a statement attacking NFL Network television reporter Adam Schefter, formerly a Denver Post sportswriter.

"Adam Schefter has always been a false rumor monger with respect to the Raiders and anti-Raider based upon his relationship with Denver and Mike Shanahan," the statement read.

"No decisions have been made relative to the 2007 Oakland Raiders nor will they be made for some time. Adam Schefter could not have gotten his information from a reliable source because there is only one reliable source and he doesn't trust Adam," the statement concluded.

Schefter, a former president of the Pro Football Writers of America, covered the Denver Broncos for nearly 15 years. He also co-authored a book with Shanahan, the coach of the Broncos.

This year's Raiders, with a record of 2-12, are just one loss away from matching their 1962 team for most defeats in franchise history.

Not exactly a denial...

eh? way i understood it that was inside info the comentator claimed to have. though the raiders said the guy is makeing it up.

He might not be fired now, but I think it's safe to assume that Art Shell will not return next year. Saying that, this isn't much news, imo.

Who would want to coach the Raiders anyhow? That's like being demoted down to a high school team.

On paper, Raiders aren't that bad. I didn't get the whole Jerry Porter thing in the beginning of the season. If they can draft a star RB then their receivers only get that much better. I don't like any of their RBs now.

but seriously the reporters denial was SOOO STUPID.

they Raiders don't have to say, "Art Shell isn't fired". that is NOT what they are denying.

they are denying whether or not the decision is MADE, hence acknowledging that firing Art Shell is a POSSIBILITY.

the reporters response to the raiders denial in my mind only proved that he did have it out for Al Davis and the Raiders.

I agree. Their defense is #4 in the league, they got some good young speedy guys in last year's draft, and Burgess/Sapp is a deadly combo on the defensive line.

At the start of the season their group of receivers was as talented as anyone, with Moss and Porter, and Doug Gabriel/Ronald Curry being solid guys as well. Even Lamont Jordan at RB had a 1000 yard season the year before.

Their QB and offensive coordinator are the two biggest culprits in them being the worst offense in the league however. I was really hoping for Martz to join the team last off-season, but we'll see how they deal with that next year.

The Raiders need a complete re-haul of the management/ownership. It's sad to see so much talent and potential from their players wasted due to crappy ownership.
