art restoration gone bad

o-RESTORATION-570.jpg

The sad thing is, I like it.

It has an odd primal and alien quality to it.

I like it better.

Not the worst thing to ever hit the art world. Most of the art vandalism that has ever taken place has been state-sponsored.

Pope Pius, V didn't like penises, so we now have fig leaves, which were added as many as thousands of years later, adorning most of the classical art and sculpture of Rome. Also, the original pain wore off most of the statues from classical Roman and Greek periods. All of those white marble statues used to be painted in brilliant color. Somewhere along the line, someone decided that was too gaudy.

Christ, I've opened this thread 5 or 6 times now, and that picture makes me laugh every single time. I'd just leave it. Have her sign the bottom, and it'll be a funny piece of history.

the article. it must be read thoroughly.

ps - she took it upon herself to restore the painting.

I assume Martinez is a famous artist? How did this woman enter the church, steal the painting, work on it for weeks/months, return it and nobody noticed? C'mon. Something doesn't add up.

Fresco means it's painted directly onto the wall.

I wonder if I can hire her to do a self portrait of me.

It looks like he gained some weight. Looks like a double chin now.

Wow that's brutal. I can kind of see what she did though, rather than fill in all the individual parts that are missing paint she just slapped paint to fill the entire areas. Can't quite do that if you are trying to restore something.
