Arrrghhh! PC shuts itself down during boot!!! Helppp!

Hey guys,

My new(ish) self-built PC has been switching itself off during boot intermittently for the past couple of days. Seems to always happen when I turn it on in the morning, and once it turns off the only way to turn it back on is for me to switch the PSU off, yank out the power cable, plug the power cable back it, turn the PSU back on and then the PC back on.

It doesn't "shut down", it just turns off. The first couple of times it happened after actually booting into Windows, but now occasionally it does it just after POST or during the Windows loading screen.

The annoying thing is that when it eventually does boot fine, I can use it for hours without a single hitch. Turn it off, and the next morning the drama starts again.

Whassup????

400w PSU
AMD 2500+ (not OCed)
MSI K7N2-Delta
2x512 Crucial PC3200 (not OCed)
Radeon 9800 Pro (not OCed)
120GB Seagate IDE HDD

Thanks for any help!

Probably the power supply, what is the watts of the power supply.
I have a GeforceFX 5900U and it says on the box that the power supply should be
350 watts or more, its under the mininum requirements for the PC.Is there anything
like that on the 9800pro box

Hey guys,

When I posted the problem I hadn't even considered the power supply as being the problem, because I've never had any PSU-related issues before. Always assumed any of 'em would work fine. I mean, it's just a fricken PSU, right?? 🙂

When I built the PC I bought a case that allegedly came with a "400w PSU". It did come with a PSU, but it has no stickers or identifying marks on the actual unit to tell me what it is or where it comes from. So my guess is it's a cheapass crap one, 400w or not.

Did some research, posted the same question in a couple of other forums, and everyone is shouting PSU to me. Apparently the biggest clue is that I need to reset the PSU before I can restart my PC once the PC shuts down.

Never noticed it before, but the issues coincided with my purchase of the 9800 Pro - which I've read sucks alotta juice.

So I've ordered myself a Q-Tec 550W PSU which folks here in the UK say is good for the money - hopefully this will do the job!

Thanks.

I don`t think you have to get that bigga power supply, a 400W would be grand for
3 reasons: 1.It costs more
2.It is bigger,so will it fit (probably will though)
3.The extra noise

If you take out the power supply there`s always a sticker on it to show the voltage, watts, current.
e.g. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Sparkle_148.html
go to this site, look at the second power supply, see the sticker on top,the answer is there

But if it is a 400 watt then get the 550 watt and Q-Tec is an excellent brand

I would actually look at heat as being a possibility. Are you sure that the heatsink is making good contact with the processor? Is the fan blowing? I had an AMD system where i had forgot to plug in the CPU fan. It would get so hot just booting up that the motherboard would shut itself down before Windows even loaded. I too had to unplug it and wait (really for it to cool down) before I could restart it. Since no one else suggested it I thought I'd just throw it out there.

Cheers Conor.

I'm not 100% convinced it is the PSU that is giving me the problems, but everyone says that should be my first port of call. And to be honest, a system like mine deserves a decent PSU anyway, whether it is the cause of my current problems or not. But it's coming in the post tommorow - I'll install it and see what happens. Problem is my particular issue seems to be intermittent, so diagnosis isn't straightforward, but at least I know I have a decent PSU in and that rules out that option.

Thanks for the input Vetteguy. The CPU fan is definitely running. It's a CoolerMaster Aero thingy with a rheostat variable fan speed control on the front of my system. The CPU never even comes close to 40 degrees, so CPU heat is not an issue.

I'm banking my hope on the new PSU. Next time I'll know that a good PSU is quite crucial!

Thanks
