I can't find any straight info on this. I swear I read at Practically Networking last night that the Linksys 4 port router can only forward single ports and the SMC Barricade can forward port ranges, while I just read the exact opposite at DSL reports. :Q:Q What about the Netgear R314? Thanks

Also, what's new in the v2 of the Linksys 4 port router? Thanks again.

Also, is the RT314 a switch or a hub? I thought just about all the routers were switches, but I just read that the RT314 is a hub, which is surprising.

On the issue of ports, some of this enhancement was done via later release of Firmware. If the reviewer did is review earlier the review will not indicate the true capacity of the product. The way to deal with it is to go to the support sites of the manufacture, and read the firmware update info.

The RT314 is a Switch:

Yes, RT314 has a built-in switch. Limited port forwarding capabilities supposedly, but I never use this stuff. Plus, who knows if the firmware has been upgraded to include it.

Yes, but it didn't have port range forwarding. Dunno if this has been included with recent firmware upgrades though.

Thanks for all the help. :) If I do end up getting cable, I think I'm still going to get the SMC Barricade, though the linky is still on my list. I know the RT314 is a good fast router, but I've heard its advanced features can be pretty hard to use. Also, I've hear some people having problems with the linky locking up, dropping connections, etc., so that's why it's below the Barricade on my list.

But his question was not if can forward ports but if it could forward a range of ports. The Netgear will allow 10 ports. Not a range of ports, just 10 single ports.

I'm surprised Netgear hasn't updated the firmware to allow port range maping. Maybe it isn't something they can do in firmware?

For the Linksys router, earlier firmware for the linksys did not support port ranging. The 1.3x series added this feature.

There's no good reason the netgear 314 shoudn't add this feature as well. Maybe their updates are slower since the router is actually made my zytel.
