You know what? I still haven't heard from my mechanic about this. I left the van there last Sunday. I dropped the keys with a note in his drop box. The note said to call with an estimate for installing the module. It also explained how I determined it was the cause of the problem, and that there was no hurry. No hurry, but damn, you'd think he would have called by now!

How would the conversation go, if this were you, and you called him about it today?

But I want satisfaction here! This may be a turning point for the relationship between myself and this mechanic I've had for 20 years...

My God, it never ends!

Just got a call from the mechanic. Says he tried replacing the Control Module as I asked, but that didn't do the trick. Still wouldn't start when freezing. Since I had heated that part, causing it to start, that got him looking at the distributor area. Turns out the pickup coil was the culprit. He said a "star shaped" part that attaches to, or near, broke during installation, so that had to be replaced as well. He also replaced the distributor cap. He said it has started flawlessly the last few 32 degree mornings. Total for this trip:

  • Control Module
    Distributor cap & Rotor
Remanufactured Distributor W/ New Pickup Coil
    1 hour labor
    _____________
    $225.00
Good thing I'm made of money!
