UPDATE: Screw 'em. Just signed up with Earthlink. :D $21.95 mo 1st 3 mos.

---------------------------

After a dispute with Pac Bell a few years ago, I dropped them in favor of ATT for my local (and long distance) service. The service's been sorta ok, but I want DSL.

I check out Covad's website (ATT DSL) and it says that DSL is available for my phone number.

Sweet!

Try to order online and get a message that I need to call customer service because I have ATT local service. Ok...

"Sorry sir, DSL is not currently available at your location."

Whatchu talkin about? Not only did the website say that it was, but my next door neighbor in my apartments has SBC DSL.

"Sorry sir, it's because you have ATT local service. If you had Pac Bell we could do it."

I'm thinking What the Fungus? -- Sooo... what you're saying is that if I want ATT DSL, I would have to DROP my ATT local service and get your competitors service?

"Yes sir."

You realize how completely retarded that sounds right?

"Yes sir."

<CLICK> I hung up.

Seriously, how screwed up is that????

You're just now learning this? Dude, phone company's have sucked since Alexander Graham Bell dude. It's just a part of their nature. If they stopped sucking, they'd stop being a phone company.

LoL... It's just that this was sooo .... BIZARRE.

Like Ford saying that I can't get the new Ford rims on my car unless I have a Chevy.

Sorry for your experience, but I got a a hot deal brag and moan for ya :) So I've been paying 98.78 a month for local phone line, 512/128 long distance, caller id, voicemail and call waiting. So I call up sprint and am like, how do you plan on competing with other ISP's in my area? They said what offer are they running I said 1.5/256 for 39.99 a month for cable, they offered me 1.5/384 plus long distance, local, caller id, voicemail and call waiting for $84.98 a month, so I save 14 bucks and get 3 times the bw :) Of course I am leaving for college in 8 days so I don't really benefit lol.

Hehe, but on the upside sprint service is provided by earthlink and I can attest that they are good, in 4 years I've only had it go down probably 7 times, never for longer than an hour, normally like 20 mins, plus if you have a problem, there is generally not a very long wait to get in touch with their techs (like <5min)
