And no, I don't mean the "L33t W4r3z do0d" P2P specials. I mean games where I can take to the high seas, loot ships, sack, pillage, and run amuck in my ship at my own will - not just "pirate-themed" games of another genre.

It seems to be quite the untapped market. Methinks we need a MMOPPG - Massively ... Pirate Playing Game.

Yeah, but there's plenty of ninja-based games ... Tenchu, the new Ninja Gaiden, even Prince of Persia smacks of such techniques, what with the running up of walls and such.

The only one I can think of was a game called "Pirates", but I think I last played that 8 years ago. But you are right they should have a new pirate game, that would be fun. Just don't mix it with your ninja games b/c Ninja's will get super pissed at the pirate, chop their heads off, and not even think twice about it....or so I hear.

Yes there is a game EXACTLY like you are thinking off. But I forgot it's name. It's a recent game too (2001), and plays very nicely. But too bad I forgot the name.

EDIT: Remember the name

Port Royale

There is also a port royale 2.

Pirates of the Caribbean had a pretty good game tie in. It was actually going to be Pirates! 2 (I think) but near the end of development Disney wanted to rename it to tie it to the movie.

Apparently it ends rather abruptly, but there's some configuration file tweak you can do that lets you continue the game after the storyline ends (like GTA3/VC)

Pirates of the Caribbean is pretty good, albiet a bit short...

Btw - it has almost nothing to do with the movie.. disney grabbed up the game and changed the name and threw in some movie elements, but most of the game was designed beforehand.

YoHoHo Puzzle Pirates is another of what you're looking for, although battles are done "Super Turbo Fighter" tetris style. I thought it was pretty cool, and there were always a few thousand people in the game

Huh, googling it got me there in three clicks. If people suck that badly that they can't get there, they don't deserve to be playing The Internet.

BF1942 and UT2k3 have Pirate mods, though many are having problems getting the UT2k3 mod to load(it's only an Alpha release). The BF1942 mod is pretty good though, try it out if you have BF1942.

That game is AWESOME. I cannot stop playing it. I have quite the armada right now, muahaha. Pirates of teh Caribbean is OK, similar to Morrowind(of course, its by the same company). Sea Dogs(Bethesda's first Pirate game, PoC is it's sequel) is also good.

EDIT: I got my copy for $20 at EBGames B&M

EDIT: Ooops missed the Port Royale mention a few posts above. Its worth looking into imho.

Obviously Pirates and the Monkey Island series were great games, but a few months ago I picked up a game very similar to Pirates, but with more of a Sim-City slant too.

Port Royale it's called. Not quite as good as Pirates, but very very similar and not bad at all. My only complaint is that you would get caught up carrying/trading goods more than warfare and such, but perhaps that was just me and my playstyle.

Wow, Port Royale looks great :)

I'm going to have to get the demo.

Coincidentally, I'm reading James A Mitchener's "Caribbean" at the moment, about the very subject matter the game is based on. Incredibly interesting! Read the book if you see it.

Off to grab the demo :)
